Scroll through to 7 minutes in this episode of V Entertainment and you’ll see myself and a few of my media colleagues (Nadia from EWN and Grant from People Magazine) doing our 67 minutes on Nelson Mandela Day. We found ourselves at Roots & Shoots on the outskirts of Soweto on the 18th of July. Roots & Shoots was set up by Dr. Jane Goodall. This is what she has to say about it:
“Roots creep underground everywhere and make a firm foundation. Shoots seem very weak, but to reach the light, they can break open brick walls. Imagine that the brick walls are all the problems we have inflicted on our planet. Hundreds of thousands of roots & shoots, hundreds of thousands of young people around the world, can break through these walls. We CAN change the world. ”
Our morning included placing rocks in a more suitable area, painting tyres, deweeding and planting. I must say the 67 minutes went by so quickly, but what a rewarding experience!
