So last week and last night (in SA) respectively American Idol favourite, Pia Toscano was eliminated from the singing contest- much to everyone’s surprise and utter shock. The star, who tackled Ike and Tina’s River Deep, Mountain High, was evidently moved by the shocking news, as were the judges and the studio audience too.
But the curse of having the firm favourites eliminated so early shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise to you. Look at Chris Daughtry, look at Jennifer Hudson. Then you look at how well they’ve done since the competition and you realise sometimes it isn’t always such a bad thing. In fact, for Pia, things are looking super as it currently stands. There are rumours circulating that she has already been signed to Interscope Records and that the bosses there are hoping to drop her first single soon. There are two scenarios here:
1. If they drop Pia’s single ahead of the final and the winner’s single being released, Pia stands to be a lot bigger than the actual winner in terms of downloads and sales. Do the AI bosses want that? Surely they’d want the winner to be the biggest name and the most successful – even though this doesn’t seem to be the case in recent years.
2. If the American Idol bosses give Pia and Interscope the go-ahead to record and release, maybe this will actually make the show bigger. It will keep the interest in the show up there. The top 11 tour might be bigger than last season because people want to hear her single and see some of the others perform too.
We’ll have to wait and see. I personally feel like she should be allowed to get on with it. She’s already making a big name for herself outside of the singing contest. Several outlets in the US are reporting that Toscano is dating Dancing With The Stars contestant Mark Ballas. I have no doubt she is going to be the big name to come out of this season. She’s the real deal, the full package. Can’t wait to hear and see more of Pia Toscano.
