Comedy Central you guys are but rocking the party! Not only do you guys have some of the best shows on the channel, but you’re really putting SA comedy and the comedians on the map by trying new, innovative things!! Okay, now that the Comedy Central plug is done, we can get on with the business of this post.
In light of what I’ve mentioned above, Comedy Central’s first Roast is happening in September. The controversial star that is Steve Hofmeyr will be roasted before an audience at Gold Reef City on the 11th of September. Who will be doing the roasting? Well the hilarious and lovely Kuli Roberts will be joined on stage by John Vlismas and Casper de Vries. The news gets better. Comedy giant Trevor Noah will be holding down the Roastmaster duties and this is a massive scoop for the channel. Trevor has enjoyed a lot of success in the US this year and so to get him back in SA to do the first ever roast is awesome. Good on you Comedy Central (plug again).

TREVOR NOAH FANS THE FLAMES OF “THE COMEDY CENTRAL ROAST OF STEVE HOFMEYR”
Johannesburg, 7 August 2012: Viacom International Media Networks Africa (VIMN Africa) has revealed that South Africa stand-up legend and 2012 “Comic of the Year” Trevor Noah (@Trevornoah) will take on the role of official Roastmaster for “The Comedy Central Roast of Steve Hofmeyr” (#RoastZA).
“The Comedy Central Roast of Steve Hofmeyr”, an event to celebrate the launch of Comedy Central in Africa, will take place at The Lyric Theatre at Gold Reef City, Johannesburg on Tuesday 11 September, premiering on TV on Comedy Central (DStv Channel 122) on Monday 24 September at 21:00 CAT.
Sparks are bound to fly as Noah presides over Comedy Central’s first ever African Roast, acting as emcee and dishing out a sharp “tribute” to Roastee Steve Hofmeyr (@Steve_Hofmeyr) – all while keeping his panel of celebrity Roasters (including Casper de Vries (@casperrasper), John Vlismas (@fortyshort) and Kuli Roberts (@kuliroberts) – in line.
Noah will be following in the prestigious footsteps of past Comedy Central Roastmasters such as Seth McFarlane (“The Comedy Central Roast of Charlie Sheen”), Jane Lynch (“The Comedy Central Roast of Roseanne”), Katt Williams (“The Comedy Central Roast of Flava Flav”), Jimmy Kimmel (“The Comedy Central Roast of Pamela Anderson”) Kathy Griffin (“The Comedy Central Roast of Joan Rivers”) and Lisa Lampanelli (“The Comedy Central Roast of Larry the Cable Guy”).
Commented Evert van der Veer, Head of Comedy Central, Africa, “The success of any Roast depends on both the choice of Roastee and the comic skills of the Roastmaster, so we are delighted that a comedian of Trevor’s stature will be at the helm for “The Comedy Central Roast of Steve Hofmeyr”.
Commented Alex Okosi, Senior Vice President & Managing Director, VIMN Africa (formerly MTV Networks Africa), “Trevor Noah’s involvement cements an impressive comedy line-up for Comedy Central’s inaugural African Roast and sets the stage for a hugely entertaining live event and appointment-to-view television programme.”
Trevor Noah first made a name for himself performing for South African audiences and has often shared a stage with some of the country’s funniest comedians including Riaad Moosa, Darren Simpson, Marc Lottering and Barry Hilton. In 2011, after his meteoric success in South Africa, Noah began making his mark on the US comedy circuit, winning over American audiences with his signature brand of stand-up comedy. Noah scored a South African first in January 2012 by performing live on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno”, one of the US’s most prestigious entertainment shows. Four years after having been voted “Best Breakthrough Act” at the South African Comedy Awards in 2008, Noah confirmed his dominance of the SA comedy scene in July 2012 when he was named “Comic of the Year” at the second annual Comics’ Choice awards ceremony – ahead of Nik Rabinowitz, Riaad Moosa and Loyiso Gola. In September 2012, Noah makes a triumphant return to South Africa with “That’s Racist” – his one-man national stand-up tour.
