Gary Player is one of the world’s most celebrated golfers, who has enjoyed much success in his career. For many years, he has wowed crowds the world over, and made loads of money, but he has also put his name, talent and money behind organisations and charitable causes to help those less fortunate. One such initiative Mr. Player founded was the Gary Player Invitational. This year’s GPI, presented by Coca-Cola will be staged at Sun City’s The Lost City Golf Course from the 20th to the 23rd of November – and many of you have been wondering who will be participating. Well…
It has just been announced that former Manchester United soccer star, Andy Cole will be joining in on the festivities this year. On being announced as one of the celebs coming down for the GPI, Cole said, “This will be my fifth visit to SA. I love the scenery, people, climate and the food and I’m looking forward to taking part and meeting Gary Player for the first time”.
He added “I think it is always good to give back and help others which are less fortunate, I get a great sense fulfilment from doing just that too.”
Others competing/ participating include actress Vanessa Haywood, SA cricketer Herschelle Gibbs, Ian Woosnam, Lee Slattery and Carly Booth. To date the gary Player Invitational has raised over R600 million for various causes supported by The Player Foundation. This is amazing and I’m sure they will continue to raise a lot more this year and beyond.
This is why I love sport and sportsmen and women. They offer some exhilirating and thrilling action on the field, they inspire us to be better, healthier and do good things for those less fortunate than ourselves. Dig it.
