SAMA winner, Tresor to open for SEAL on his SA tour

Unknown-2

Fresh off his SAMA wins at the weekend, singer/ songwriter Tresor is set to open for soul singer Seal, as part of his SA tour. The tour kicks off this weekend in Johannesburg, at the Ticketpro Dome. Seal, Tresor and their respective teams will move on to Durban on the 14th and then in Cape Town on the 16th.

Chris Brown back in SA this July

ChrisBrownA couple of years ago I happened to be in Durban, and at the airport when international singer Chris Brown arrived. It was mayhem, people lost their minds when they heard he’d just touched down, so imagine what happened when he casually walked through the airport. The star was extremely friendly, but was ushered rather quickly to his vehicle.

It seems he loved Durban that much because he’s coming back for more this July. He’ll be here for what organisers are calling THE MOTHER OF ALL PARTIES. Mabala Noise Entertainment, together with Back To The Oldskool are bringing Brown down for a gig at the Kings Park Stadium on July 2nd. He’ll be sharing the stage with a whole bunch of other artists, and that line-up will be revealed in the weeks building up to the gig. For now, you can get your tickets from Computicket on the 24th. Ticket prices:

Golden Circle:  R750

General Access: R450

VIP Lounge packages: R1800.00. VIP Package includes a fully staffed facility including dedicated waitresses, hostesses, bar staff and senior management, plus much more.

Thanks for the #Lemonade Beyoncé

LemonadeIt’s a Sunday morning in Johannesburg. It’s supposedly Autumn, but if I look outside we’re in for another scorcher of a day. I need something refreshing to fuel me along for a marathon of nothingness – and by that I mean a lazy day, as Sundays should be spent. Something that tickles my fancy is something delicious and fresh. Something like #Lemonade. And boy have I found a delicious blend.

One of the biggest stars in the entertainment industry right now (and for the last twenty years or so) is the formidable Beyoncé Knowles. The star continues to break boundaries and borders with her craft, highlighting just how powerful brand Beyoncé
is and how fearless she is in her attempt to be the best she can possibly be. It’s remarkable, it’s genius. It’s also very rare. Maybe the reason why we’re subjected to a lot of the mediocre crap for so many months of any given year between her albums is because she wants to us to realise that she will break the mundane spell with something oh so special.

So by now you’re wondering what the link between my desire for lemonade and Beyoncé is. Well if you’re just waking up, the one word that is and will be trending all day is #Lemonade. That’s because Beyoncé just dropped her visual album with that title. The film, of which she was the executive producer, aired on HBO a few hours ago and after that, and as to be expected, the star dropped her new album. It’s currently streaming on Tidal, which I and no doubt thousands of others have now signed up to.

Let’s talk about production. Or do we even have to? This woman’s attention to detail is incredible. The storylines of the videos are powerful, and the way in which she has married story with production is amazing. From narration to grading, cinematography to editing, these videos are visual artpieces. Sign up and watch it now.

I haven’t listened enough to delve deeply into the themes throughout the album, but one major theme is infidelity. Did he cheat on her? And by he, I could be referring to Jay Z, to Matthew Knowles or to any other man or woman who has ever strayed. Beyoncé doesn’t explicitly say who she is referring to, so this could all be conceptual. I mean look at what it’s doing just on this post alone – we’re talking about it and therefore drawing attention to the album.

You see Beyoncé Knowles is no fluffy pop star. She is a powerful, extremely self-assured, talented (some may even go as far as to say gifted) and intelligent woman. She may have sold millions and millions of albums to date, traveled far and wide, done a lot more than most will ever get to, but she like you and me is human. A super human, but human nonetheless. I may not be able to resonate with many of the themes throughout this album and I may not be considered her target market. I can however listen to the music and draw a lot more from this chapter in her musical life, and in doing so draw my own conclusions, connections and the like from there. I said this on Twitter earlier. The music is that much better when it stands for something and that something is uplifting, empowering, socially relevant. That’s #Lemonade.

When Beyoncé is ready to share parts of her private life with the world, she does so in her own way, her own time. You know why? Because she can. She answers to nobody. She answers to Beyoncé and if Beyoncé says yes, then best you be prepared because the powerhouse has a plan and it’s bigger than the last one. In 2011, Beyoncé released an album called 4. It was the first time the star had broken away from her father, and decided to take control of her career and own affairs. It was probably one of the most nervewrecking periods of the star’s already successful career, but she knew the time was right and she knew she could. And then she did. And then she never looked back. And ain’t that one beautiful, amazing story?

In that moment where you know and believe that you can, half of the battle is won. The rest is up to you to make it the most lucrative decision for you, be it financially, spiritually, emotionally, physically. That documentary is saved on my PVR and it serves as a constant reminder that I cannot settle for a mundane existance. I too have a story, dreams and goals that I want to share. They may not be on the same grandiose scale as Beyoncé, but they’re there and they exists. In both my and your life, we will work with some powerful brands, but the only one that truly matters is yours. Don’t ever let it take second best. Once you realise the power and purpose of your brand, you will never look back. You will continue in your efforts to build it up, creatively innovate, be unique and offer the best you can to those around you. Make it matter, be relevant, be conscious and aware of what matters and once your find that, pour yourself some freshly made Lemonade and toast to your damn self!

This parody of Rihanna’s Work is everything

Work, work, work, work, work… lemme seememananame work work work work work. Who knows what the lovely Rihanna is saying, but who cares? It’s hit the top of the charts, the video has been viewed millions and millions of times and it’s catchy as all hell. So naturally the video was going to get a parody special dedicated to it. And it has arrived! And it is everything!!! I love the part where she says “Took it to Kansas and made it caucasian”. Dead. Watch it below.

Oh and if you hate the song (many do), maybe you’ll love her new single Kiss it Better. She looks amazing in this video and the song happens to be one of my favourites off ANTI.

One of the most incredible singers is getting ready to come back to SA this year. I’m talking about the one, the only, the awesome and the talented SEAL. He then moves on to Durban, where he’ll be playing at the ICC Durban Arena on the 14th and this is followed by a gig in the Mother City on the 16th.

Are you as excited to see him live in SA, as I am? A man who has sold over 30 million albums worldwide, has nine studio albums to his name, and has given us some of the most incredible music in his twenty plus years in the music business. I’m pretty sure tickets are going to sell very quickly, so don’t be that guy or girl umming and aahing about whether to go or not. Just book them tickets and GO.

What’s in the R2-million SAMA XXI goodie bags?

unnamed

Each and every year the Sun City Superbowl comes to life, as the who’s who from the South Africa music industry descend on the entertainment complex for the annual South African Music Awards. This year the SAMA team are celebrating twenty one years and it will no doubt be an incredible evening. The awards go down on the 19th of April and those lucky enough to be presenting, performing or hosting will be given yet another incredible goodie bag and this year’s goodie bags are valued at a whopping R2-million bucks combined. Shame ne? And these celebs hardly need any of this stuff 😉 Check this out

  • Complimentary Twisp e-cigarette, complete with accessories. You know it’s trendy to Twisp and not actually smoke anymore, so this is clever. The Super Bowl might be all Twisped out though… the haze of Twisp 🙂
  • Ray-Ban is back again and handing out some their most stylish sunnies
  • They’re getting a classy Converse watch too and trust me, if my movie screening prizes were anything to go by, these watches will be rocking
  • Miglio Designer Jewellery is supplying a set of exquisite Swarovski crystal earrings for the women and a bracelet for the men, with John Craig chipping in a handsome wallet.
  • Toe Porn will be handing out some funky socks, hoodies from Le Coq Sportif will be in the bags, which is perfectly timed for Fall and Winter. There are T-shirts from Cipo & Baxx, with Pamela Mann tucking some fashionable leggings in to the bags for good measure
  • Rocka is throwing in some earphones as well as terrific caps. I love my headphones… Mi Casa and Danny K’s are my favourites
  • Products from Mizani, Mia Rose perfume and Body Essence tissue oil courtesy of Avroy Shlain, Candi & Co hair styling vouchers and Moroccan Oil gift sets, and Iman make-up products.
