The holiday season may have come and gone (and quickly at that) but it doesn’t mean you can’t keep up the fun times with your little one. You’ll recall I posted about the awesome M-Net Movies Family activation last month. If you went through, I’m sure you picked up some tips and tricks, as well as some fun activities you and your family can enjoy when you’re not watching TV. If you didn’t you missed out, but not that much because the M-Net Movies Family team are making sure they’re keeping their dedicated Pinterest page filled with loads of fun. Be sure to click on the link.

What’s really cool about this page is that all the boards are themed around the 4pm movies, so you can enjoy this stuff while you watch the movie – and this is what you can look forward to this week:

The Croods

Chicken Run

Adventures in Zambezia

Big Brother Hotshots – more Housemates revealed

Age: 25

Professional sushi chef Permithias unsurprisingly lists sushi as one of his favourite foods, alongside pizza. He doesn’t have a favourite book, but enjoys watching The Originals on TV. A fan of animation, Permithias’ favourite films are Turbo and Happy Feet, while he also likes the music of Chris Brown, James Blunt and Joe Tomas.

His mom is his role model, because she provided for the family with ‘nothing but blood, sweat and tears’. He is the eldest of five children; he has three sisters and a brother. Permithias says that becoming a chef is his greatest achievement so far, because it ‘opened a window’ for himself and his family.

He was inspired to enter Big Brother Hotshots because he’s been watching the show for years but won’t sell his soul or lose his self-worth in the process. Asked how he feels knowing that the whole continent will be watching him 24/7, he says: ‘scared, but it will all come together the way it should’. If he wins, he’ll take care of his Mom and open his own restaurant.

Permithias says he’s easy-going, open-minded and ‘down for whatever is fun’ and enjoys others who are also open-minded.

Nhlanhla is from Witbank in South Africa, and is a Business Analyst, Actor and Model with an Honours degree in Information Systems. He loves fresh butternut soup, lamb shank & vegetables and cottage cheese pie. His favourite books include Animal Farm and The Great Gatsby and he enjoys Game of Thrones, Shameless, Suits and Heroes on TV. He lists Brad Pitt and Will Smith as two of his favourite actors.

His favourite place in South Africa is the Groenkloof Nature Reserve in Pretoria and the best things about the continent as a whole are the people and their strength & resilience. Amsterdam made a big impression on him at a young age when he went there and learnt a lot about himself and personal growth.

His mother is his role model, because she sacrificed a lot to get him where he is today and taught him a great many things. Together with his Grandmother, she has influenced his life a great deal because they were always strong-willed and gently guided him through life.

Nhlanhla entered Big Brother Hotshots because he’s been a fan ever since he saw his first season on DStv. ‘I just knew that I wanted to be on the show myself, and wanted to take the opportunity to have my personality spread all over the world’. He thinks having the continent’s eyes on him 24/7 will be ‘nerve-wracking’, but says it’s a great feeling knowing he’ll be watched by the continent and can influence the viewers.

He describes himself as ‘crazy, eccentric, narcissistic, energetic and spiritual’ and enjoys the fact that he’s always positive and optimistic, and always sees the beauty in others.

SA film, Die Windpomp honoured Down Under

Die Windpomp

SA film, Die Windpomp seems to be hitting the right spot abroad. The Afrikaans film was selected to participate in the Australian Gold Coast Festival. Just to give you a better idea of what this means, it will make its debut alongside films like The Grand Budapest Hotel, which stars some of the biggest names in the movie business. Not to shabby for a local film 😉

So you may be asking how on earth did a local, Afrikaans film get selected to participate in an Australian film festival? Well Mitch Ziems, the festival’s program director said “DIE WINDPOMP is wonderfully written and incredibly touching. There is a large Afrikaans community in Australia, and DIE WINDPOMP is the perfect fit. We are thrilled to have the film in this year’s lineup.” The film wasn’t actually submitted for consideration, but when Ziems heard about the film and after watching the trailer, he requested it be added to the line up.

“It doesn’t happen often that a festival calls a producer and requests a film.” Says DIE WINDPOMP’s producer Chris Roland. “We usually submit films to festivals along with thousands of other submissions and hope we get noticed. It’s fantastic when we get asked.” Check out the trailer below:

They producers are now submitting the film to several other festivals including Cannes and Toronto International Film Festivals in France and Canada. And if you’re unable to make any of those festivals, make an X in your diary on the 25th because that’s when the film will release locally. It stars some of SA’s most loved stars including Ian Roberts, Grethe Fox, Armand Greyling and Leandie du Randt .

Big Brother StarGame Housemate profiles

The new season of Big Brother Africa is here. It’s called Big Brother Stargame and it officially kicked off last night. The show, in its seventh season, went live to the continent from its Johannesburg headquarters. International rapper J.Cole was on stage for a performance, as were some of choreographer Somizi’s dancers. I got to interview Cole yesterday too, nice guy and very friendly. I’ll have more from that interview this week, but for now, here are the housemate profiles for this year’s season:

Age:                34

Country:         South Africa

The following housemates from across Africa entered the Big Brother StarGame House tonight (Sunday, 6 May) in the hope of winning Africa’s biggest reality show. They are:

Babalwa entered Big Brother StarGame because she loves competing in challenges, both physical and intellectual. The model, events manager and hair salon boss from King William’s Town in the Eastern Cape says the fact that she will be pushed to the limit in the house excites her and that she loves winning – “losing ain’t for me!” she says.

Barbzis single and says that she won’t sell her morals short for money – viewers shouldn’t expect any hanky panky from her in the house, but she’s game for anything else! She loves samp & beans with oxtail and her favourite books are “Nice Girls Don’t Get Rich” and “The Secret”. She enjoys most reality TV – she’s a huge Big Brother fan – and also likes watching news channels like CNN and Al Jazeerah.

She says her favourite places in the world outside of her home country are Miami and Lagos – the former for the parties, nice people and great shopping and the latter for the “fun”.

Barbz is inspired by a lot of people, but picks her Mom as the most influential because she moulded her into the person she is today. She says her parents influenced her life most because they made sure she went to good schools and their strict nature kept her out of trouble. The qualities she likes most in other people are respect, openness, friendship and “people with backbone” while she dislikes lies, false accusations, bad-mouthing, laziness and spitefulness. She entered Big Brother StarGame to market her brand and her business, to create awareness around xenophobia and to spread love amongst Africans.

Age:                26

Country:         Ghana

Comedian, TV presenter, event organizer and talent manager DKB hails from Accra. He entered Big Brother StarGame because it’s a platform for people from different cultures and socialization to meet and bring the best out of themselves. Hedescribes himself as sociable, kind, trustworthy, entertaining and adaptable and promises viewers “non-stop entertainment”.

DKB’s role model is Tyler Perry because of the way he’s used his talent to empower black people. He says his Uncle has had the biggest influence on him “because he has taught me how to be a responsible man”.

His favourite part of Ghana is the Cape Coast, while the best thing about Africa is the culture. He’s a huge fan of Ice Cube and Tyler Perry and enjoys the music of Sarkodie, M.I.m Jay-Z, Eminem, HHP, Busta Rhymes, Usher and Freshlyground.

If he wins Big Brother StarGame, DKB would use the grand prize money to improve his life and that of his family. He would also start a business and create a charity investment that would sustain the outreach for a very long time. Hehopes that participating in Big Brother will better his interpersonal relations with people from other parts of Africa and boost his image as a formidable showbiz personality.

Speaking of viewing, there is no escaping the cameras. This year there are 40 cameras and 100 microphones. So you will hear and see everything… EVERYTHING.
