Oh My Gaga- all kinds of meaty

Lady Gaga might’ve worn an Alexander McQueen dress on the MTV VMAs white carpet on Sunday night, but that wasn’t the dress everyone was going ‘Gaga’ over. It was the fleshy dress (pictured above) that had the True Blood, Twilight gang drooling over no doubt! The dress was designed by Franc Fernandez, who says it was made out of 50 pounds of meat and according to Gaga it “smelt good”. Read the rest of the article here. This will no doubt go down as one of the highlights of the 2010 MTV VMAs- alongside her 8 Moon Men. I wonder if she’ll be drying out the dress and saving that as a memento on the shelf too? Gross. Emmys 2010: Julia Ormands wins a ‘Nommy’

The Emmy Award for Best Supporting Actress in a miniseries or movie goes to Julia Ormond for her role in the Temple Grandin. She says she got so excited when she heard the news, she told her mum she had been Emmy Naminated for a Nommy”. Haha. Dig her!

Stand Up, Lead SA

A friend of mine and I were recently talking about the amazing feeling, the vibe; the sense of pride and the overwhelming emotions we were filled with in the build up to and during the 2010 FIFA World Cup. We showed the world that we have the ability, the drive and passion to host the biggest event in world sport. You know that cheesy line, “I was there” that we kept hearing? Well I was and as cheesy as it was/ is I still get goosebumps thinking about it. The stadia were beautiful, the soccer so exciting- and this all coming from someone who wasn’t a big soccer fan in the first place. I loved the world cup, but more importantly I grew to love my country and its people even more then what I did before. See the video below just to get a brief idea of what I mean..

So with all of that in mind, we were discussing a way forward. We quizzed each other about how we keep that feeling going? How do we keep that passion? That common love and pride we all had? How do we keep the gees; the flags, the beanies… the whole lot? How did we keep a small minority from destroying that feeling by senselessly attacking foreign nationals in the threatening xenophobic attacks? We were a bit dumbstruck; at a loss, but we decided it needed to come from us first. So we started by dedicating 67 minutes of our time for Nelson Mandela Day. Was that enough? Of course not, but it’s a start! Then when I woke up this morning, my radio was tuned into Talk Radio 702 and it was then that I first heard about Lead SA- an initiative set up by Primedia Broadcastings and Independent Newspapers. In short, it’s be the change you want to see- they’ve hit the nail on the head. Lead SA was exactly what all of us were thinking, but didn’t know how to verbalise. Now it’s time to do it. What will you do? What will I do? Time to stop bitching and moaning, it’s time to change. Let’s go.

Hup Holland Hup

It’s come to this… A Netherlands versus Spain final in the FIFA World Cup. I can’t believe it’s almost over, but I think the two teams in the final are both deserving and either way, this is history! If I have to choose though, I’m going with Holland. I hope they win. Their fans have been amazing, met some really cool Dutch people; they’re festive and fun! Hup Holland Hup!

UPDATE: Paul the ‘Psychic’ octopus has made his decision and he’s going with Spain to win and Germany to triumph over Uruguay in tomorrow’s match. Let’s wait and see.

World Cup Draw tonight!

This evening’s draw for the World Cup will decide the pools for the first round of next year’s FIFA World Cup. I cannot wait. Charlize Theron, David Beckham and a whole host of other international celebrities and high profile peops will be in Cape Town for the big draw. It’s going to be huge. All the street lights in Cape Town are functioning, the city has been cleaned up and from what I’m hearing it’s looking amazing. Jealousy is me! Anyways, this is South Africa’s- and Africa for that matter- big moment. Almost 200 million people are expected to watch the live broadcast and the spectacle that will follow it with performances by TKZee and the Soweto Gospel Choir to name a few. Can’t wait.

Now if you’re on Twitter, we’re keeping the conversation alive by creating awareness and hype around our country. These are some of the topics we’re trending and hopefully with your help we can make them one of the featured trending topics on the homepage:

#World Cup

Add these to anything South Africa, world cup related and help the cause 🙂
You can also add a ‘twibbon’ of the SA flag to your avatar. Check it out here.

Countdown to 2010

Kick-off to the 2010 FIFA World Cup is just around the corner. This is a first for the African continent and if you live in South Africa, you’ll know that there is loads of construction going on. Not just for the stadiums, but also to the public transport infrastructure (Gautrain, Rea Vaya BRT etc). Hotels are being built, refurbished and more. Now besides all the soccer action, billions of viewers around the world will be tuning in to see the opening ceremony concert come the 10th of June- and i can now confirm that Emmy Award-winning producer, Kevin Wall and his company Control Room will be in charge of putting on the three hour spectacular ahead of the first match on the 11th. Listen to my interview with Kevin above and below is the official press release:

Los Angeles, Calif. (October 7, 2009) – FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association), the international governing body of football, announced today the appointment of Emmy Award-winning producer Kevin Wall and his company Control Room, the world’s leading producer of massive global events, as executive producer of the Official Kick-Off Celebration Concert of the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™. Kicking off the FIFA World Cup on 10 June 2010 at 8:00 p.m. (GMT +2), at the newly-renovated Orlando Stadium in Soweto, Johannesburg this historic three-hour live concert event will showcase the music, sport and visual pageantry of South Africa. The event will feature musical performances by major international superstars and popular African artists collaborating together, along with special appearances by past and present football legends, and will be broadcast to networks around the world for what is expected to be the greatest entertainment event to date on the African continent. All net proceeds will benefit “20 Centres for 2010”, the Official Campaign of the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™.

FIFA Secretary General Jérôme Valcke said, “This is the first time that the FIFA World Cup will be played in Africa and what better way to celebrate such a momentous occasion than with a festival of live music from Africa and beyond. This kick-off celebration will be one of the greatest events of its kind in Africa and a must-see for football and music fans around the world.”

The FIFA World Cup football tournament is the world’s most watched sporting event, and is staged every four years. This is the first time the FIFA World Cup is being held on the African continent, with 32 national teams from all over the world playing matches in ten South African stadiums in the hope of being crowned World Champions. The last FIFA World Cup in Germany attracted a global cumulative television audience of 26.29 billion (24.2 billion in-home and 2.1 billion out-of-home viewers).

“There are few things in life that can kindle such widespread passion as football, but music is without doubt one of them. With this celebratory kick-off event, football fans are in for a huge treat,” said Danny Jordaan, CEO of the 2010 FIFA World Cup Organising Committee South Africa.

“The City of Johannesburg has a deep and rich tradition in the arts and is proud to play host to such a premier cultural event. This concert will be broadcast into hundreds of millions of homes around the world and we will do everything we can to help ensure that those attending and watching on TV cherish the experience for a lifetime,” said Amos Masondo, Executive Mayor of Johannesburg.

The international and African artists performing at the official FIFA WORLD CUP KICK–OFF CELEBRATION CONCERT on 10 June 2010, plus special appearances and ticketing information, will be announced at a later date.

Kevin Wall, Control Room founder, said, “We are honored to have been selected by FIFA to organize and produce this first-ever event for the world’s largest sport. We believe sports and music transcend cultural, language and geographic barriers, and through this international event, Control Room will present the sights and sounds of unity and celebration for an unforgettable experience of which all will want to be a part.”

As the executive producer of the FIFA WORLD CUP KICK-OFF CELEBRATION CONCERT, Control Room will develop the creative vision, identify broadcast partnerships, secure global sponsorships, select artists for performances and bring well-known football players, celebrities and culturally significant representatives to participate in this first-ever global event to kick-off this historic FIFA World Cup™ in South Africa. Control Room is led by President Aaron Grosky, co-executive producer of this FIFA event. As well, Lily Sobhani, who served as worldwide events producer for the Live Earth 2007 event, will again take the reigns as a producer.
