DJ Fresh sets the record straight

Malicious, unfounded gossip and gossipers… What a waste of air, honestly! I look at some of the magazine shelves in the shops and I think to myself how on earth do these journalists, editors come up with this shit? Who are their sources? And why are they out to make people look bad? Yes I’m in the entertainment industry and yes I’m guilty of having consumed some of this news in the past, but I’ve never had any desire to write for a tabloid etc. Unfortunately while my little, “I’m all about the craft” ideas are sweet, people clearly want the trash. And speaking of trash, DJ Fresh has vehemently denied and rubbished reports about him having fathered a love child.

In the 22nd of June edition of the Sunday Sun, reports surfaced alleging that Fresh, otherwise known as Thato Sikwane, had fathered a child with his manager of 15 years. Fresh is so peeved by these allegations leveled against him that he has lodged a formal complaint against the publication with the Press Council and demanded a front-page retraction. He has also requested the article be removed from the site.

“I do not have a child with her and must add I was not given fair opportunity to reply to any of the allegations either. The article correctly states that I was in Botswana – but no attempt was made to contact me at my hotel and no attempt was made to obtain contact details for me in Botswana from my wife, my manager or anybody else. There was no attempt to contact me via social media,” he says.

I hope the Press Council rules in his favour.

Neon Run heads to Pretoria on the 15th

Pretoria, Jozi and surrounding peops listen up… The Pretoria Neon run is just around the corner and if you’re looking for some healthy vibes, coupled with a good jol, then you best be heading to SuperSport Park on the 15th. Bands like Beatenberg, Shortstraw as well as 5FM’s Roger Goode, Poppy and Rob Forbes will all be there to entertain you afterwards and who knows, maybe they’ll hit a run too. What’s the damage for this? The cost is R230 per person, under 11s pay R90 while if four people or more book the price is R190 a person. Tavis Brown from Fourfire tells us more:

Neon Runs seem to be all the rage at the moment. Tell us about this one in particular…

This is not only a South African trend but also an international movement to being healthy. Pretoria has its chance to simultaneously work out and be entertained with Neon Run’s Trademark tour.  It’s on the 15th November at SuperSport Park, doors open at 3pm and we suggest getting there early to avoid queues so you can make the race start at 6:30pm. The party goes on until 11:30pm. All entrants will receive an Official Neon Run™ headband and 3 glowsticks

You’ve chosen quite a sporty venue. Why did you decide to go there?

SuperSport Park is an Icon in the Pretoria / Centurion area. It is well recognised as a sporting and music venue and we most certainly have both aspects covered.

In addition to getting outdoors and being healthy, you’ve got a kick-ass lineup in store for the neon runners. Tell us a bit more about that lineup?

Shortstraw and Beatenberg are 2 of South Africa’s top commercial bands currently making headlines at festivals and events around the country and slamming hit singles on the South African charts. We also have top South African DJ’s Roger Goode, Chris Taylor, Poppy and Rob Forbes to round off one crazy Neon Festival.

Any prizes/ surprises on the cards?

We do spot prizes for best dressed so put in lots of effort and you could be rewarded!

Will you be running too?

The Neon Team does love to run but alas we will be too busy ensuring every aspect of the event is running smoothly to participate. We will be represented by a ton of family and friends and all the other Neon Runners out there!

Let’s get down to the ‘important’ details… What do would be neon runners wear?

Neon Runners must wear Neon Colours so they glow brightly during the run and music festival. Be creative and have fun with it! There is also Neon Paint, Glow Sunglasses and extra Glowsticks for sale at our merchandise store in the festival.

How do we enter and get involved?

Please head to to purchase tickets or go to our website to enter. On Facebook you can purchase tickets directly form our fan page NeonRunSA

DJ Warras joins 5FM

The radio shake up continues. We’ve heard of Gareth Cliff leaving national station 5FM and Alex Jay being shifted to weekends on 94.7. Plus, DJ Warras left YFM… It’s all going down. So you want to know where DJ Warras is going? Well ladies and gents, he’s joining 5FM. He, together with Tumi Voster will be taking over the 19:00- 22:00 slot on the staion, Mondays to Fridays.

Apparently Thando Thabethe will also be joining the station as a contributor to a week day show. She’ll also be hosting her own weekend show…. They “don’t want to give anything away” though, which to me means they’re still trying to figure it out 😉

Tim Zunckel, Programme Manager comments; “We are very excited, the 5FM brand always attracts top personalities who want to work on the biggest youth platform in the country. This is a perfect time for Warras to join and this will have the ability to take his career to the next level. Both Tumi and Thando are great additions to the new line-up and we looking forward to them developing on our platform.”

5FM is launching; #555 soon and when it does, we’ll know the full line up. So let the speculating begin:

– Fresh on Breakfast. He’s the only personality who is big enough to take over from Gareth in that slot. That would be awesome.

– Nicole and Angela either on mid morning or lunch, with Vember taking the other show

– Forbes on Drive. If that doesn’t happen, perhaps the rumours of Roger taking over from Fresh on Drive are true. I personally don’t think that’s a good fit, but 5’s management might think otherwise.

As far as weekends go, Maybe KB is leaving and Thando is taking over that slot? Your thoughts?

Have to share this hilarious tweet I got last night:

5 might need to do some educating, but it wont take long.

Aisha Mohamed resigns as 5FM Station Manager

I know this is the time of the year where the on air radio shuffling happens, but I didn’t expect this news today. 5FM Station Manager Aisha Mohamed has resigned from the station. Aisha has been associated to the station for over a decade now and has been running the highly successful station since 2010. She will take up a position in the commercial section at the SABC and I’m pretty sure she’ll keep a close eye on the station from time to time 😉 Wishing her the best of luck in her new position and ventures. It’s a sad day, but a good innings too. (Salute)5!

What does 2014 hold for 5FM DJ, Nicole da Silva?

Last year was a big year for some of South Africa’s celebs. From endorsement deals, to new ventures and business opportunities, to buying houses… There was a lot happening. One of those people happened to be my friend, the lovely, talented human being that is 5FM DJ, Nicole da Silva. Here’s a look back at her biggest moments of 2013 and what she has on the go for 2014:
1. It has been a good year for you. Take us through some of your highs; your winning moments in 2013.
It really has been a pretty great 2013 for me. I’ve recently teamed up with one of my friends from 5FM, Angela Guastella to form a DJing duo which has been doing amazingly well. We did a tour with Absolut Vodka, played at the YOU Spectacular Awards and have been getting a lot interest from clubs around the county. We saw each other seven days a week for a few months at a time!
Personally, I’ve felt like I was continuously busy with radio shows, gigs, events, initiatives and sponsorships that it’s one big, but awesome blur. Some things that stick out are my scuba diving trip in the Red Sea, Egypt which was magical.Getting my MINI. I’ve lusted for a Pepper White one with stripes for at least 5 years. She’s lovely. I found a place to buy(finally) and call my own after renting for the last four years. I wrote an article that was published in Cosmopolitan Magazine and I was approached by WeChat to be an ambassador for them. I also have a new wonderful man in my life. Wow, looking at those alone make me feel like it was a really great year for me. i hope 2014 can compare

2. Was there a moment, an experience or something significant this year that made you go ‘WOW” or that changed your perspectives/ plans?

I think there were two. Going to Oprah Winfrey’s O You conference made me reevaluate a lot in my life and put things back into perspective. It sounds so strange, but seeing Oprah, a woman I’ve admired for so many years, in real life and hearing her words was really special. The second was doing the Bloukrans bungee jump. I used to do a lot of adrenaline rush type things a few years back so this just reminded me of what I used to love doing and to do more of it.

3. What does 2014 hold for you?

Lots of home renovations and decorating, road trips around SA, travels to New York and either Asia or Europe, maybe a new radio show? (we never know what management has planned until March) and definitely a lot of gigs. Hopefully there’ll be some pleasant surprises along the way.

4. Any tips and/ or tricks from you to your fans to get through 2014.

Sure. Leave the big unattainable constantly recycled New Years resolutions at the door and commit yourself to monthly or quarterly goals. This way you’ll have more things achieved in the year and give yourself something to focus on with a shorter time frame. Good luck!

5. Any last thanks or New years wishes for your fans?

I don’t like the word “fan” so I’ll just say a big thanks to all my friends and the cool people who came to the gigs to party with us and everyone that listens into my early morning show and helps out with What’s That Track. They really make the early time slot more enjoyable.
Keep up to date with all Nicole’s updates, gigs and shenanigans on Twitter: @ThatNicole or like her Facebook page:
She’s a pretty good photographer too 😉

Flashmob in Parkhurst

On Saturday, 4th Avenue in Parkhurst erupted into a mix of carnival colours, as a bunch of flashmobbers took to the streets. They were there to promote the alcoholic drink, Redd’s. Patrons from Rocket, Expresso and some of the other surrounding restaurants joined in on the fun. There were even a few celebs spotted in the crowd including 94.7’s Anele Mdoda. I also saw Lunga Tshabalala, Jay Anstey and 5FM’s Poppy Ntshongwana there too. Good fun, great weather… This is Jozi!

Black Tie & Barefoot NYE in Jozi

I can’t speak on behalf of those to the left and right of the African continent, but I can vouch for millions of South Africans when I say summer in the Southern Hemisphere is amazeballs. We get to enjoy the outdoors, have braais (barbeques) with friends and family, people are in good moods and it’s just brilliant. Add the festive season into the mix and you’ve got tens of thousands in their element.

Now every year people from SA’s interior make their annual pilgrimages to the coastal regions for some fun in the sun. The weather is great and it’s a wonderful way to spend you summer vacations. I’m usually one of those people but this year I’m in Jozi *sigh. Alas, it’s quiet so you can get a lot done and kick off the new year feeling somewhat content and satisfied with what you’ve achieved… is that enough justification for me to be here? Haha.

So the big question on my lips and many others is what shall we do to ring in the New Year? If you’re in Jozi like me, here’s one of the many options (I just like the sound of this one though). It’s the 5FM Blacktie & Barefoot (NYE)5  Beach Party. The party is set to take place at Outer Limits Broadacres on the 31st. The station’s Catherine, Fix, C-Live will all be joined on stage by DJ Roxxi, Didi, Vybe & Chizzy, Spinn Bad and Shai.

Presale tickets available from R150 via . You can also check out these online platforms for more:

Lady Gaga wows Johannesburg

Last night I had the absolute privilege of seeing Lady Gaga live in concert and in South Africa for the first time. I was blown away to say the least. The design of the stage for one was just incredible. No detail was left out or unturned. The lighting, the props used, the way it rotated and in a sense morphed during the two hour or so show was fantastic. Her dancers and musicians on stage were on point too.

As for Mother Monster herself… Well, where do I begin? A lady, years five years ago was waiting tables in New York City to what we now know her as. This woman had a vision, a goal and she made it happen… And so big that she is now one of the biggest names in the world of music. And rightfully so after what I saw last night. Her wardrobe changes in accordance to the part of he show she is putting on – and let me tell you there were many wardrobe changes. They were all true to what we’ve become to expect from the star, funky, edgy and different. I’m blown away by how quickly she changes too. This show is perfection, a well-oiled machine indeed.

The fusion of music, art and of course Gaga’s creativity were exceptional. This is what a musical show should be like. Each part (or act) in the show had a story. There was dialogue, music (and lots of it), brilliant lighting and special effects. At two points (and there were probably more that I missed) but Gaga just stood there at the end of that given performance and stared at the crowd, it utter awe. She seemed shocked that people down at the bottom of the African continent had taken the time to buy tickets to her show, given up their Friday night to be there. Why? Well because she’s LADY GAGA!

A few quotes that I loved from the night and excuse the language if you’re sensitive but here they are:

“I am you. We share the same home. The same dreams. The same potential to succeed. I am everything that you love in this world… I am in this world because of you”

She also asked people if they were working in the morning. When people put their hands up she said, “I don’t give a fuck if you have to work tomorrow. I want you to have the worst hangover in the morning. I would like you to get drunk and vomit on your friends” and with that everyone got up and danced their asses off. It was brilliant!! I even saw the seated patrons up in the stands up and at it.

My favourite songs included, Born This Way, Bad Romance, Telephone (amazing), Just Dance. Man who am I kidding? I dug them all. I think she’s also good in that she can read a crowd, so she knows when to come in and say something, interact with them.

Lady Gaga, I thank you. Absolutely amazing concert that I’m so stoked to have seen. I’ve been chatting to a friend on Twitter about a possible trip to Gaga’s home town of NYC to see her there in March. Let’s see how it goes 🙂 A big thank you to Big Concerts, 5FM and M-Net for bringing the magic of the Born This Way Ball by Lady Gaga to South Africa.
