Flashmob in Parkhurst

On Saturday, 4th Avenue in Parkhurst erupted into a mix of carnival colours, as a bunch of flashmobbers took to the streets. They were there to promote the alcoholic drink, Redd’s. Patrons from Rocket, Expresso and some of the other surrounding restaurants joined in on the fun. There were even a few celebs spotted in the crowd including 94.7’s Anele Mdoda. I also saw Lunga Tshabalala, Jay Anstey and 5FM’s Poppy Ntshongwana there too. Good fun, great weather… This is Jozi!

Anele heading back to 94.7 Highveld Stereo

One of SA’s most loved stars, Anele Mdoda or simply just Anele, is making a move… The 5FM DJ will be leaving the station at the end of March. She’ll be returning to regional station, 94.7 Highveld Stereo as of the beginning of April. The DJ, who kicked off her radio career at Tuks FM during her varsity days, used to host the evening show on the 94.7 with her good friend, Grant Nash a few years ago. The duo then moved to 5FM, where they’ve hosted the 12-3 show ever since.

94.7 made the news official via their Twitter stream earlier saying: “@Anele is coming back to @947Highveld to rev up Afternoon Drive!!! #greatnews

Anele will be hosting the drive time show, which means the current host Mark Pilgrim will be moving on, as will the awesome Bailey Schneider. No word on what their plans are, or what 5FM and Anele’s co-host Grant will do as yet, but the radio shuffle continues…As soon as I have official word, I’ll post it up here. For now, a big congrats to Anele for this achievement, it’s a big deal and I feel she will rise to the challenge.

Note to self, time to get that demo done and polished… again!

Smile Dammit! Sing, smile and be happy yes!

Sometimes you wake up thinking you just need to smile. You don’t need to justify it other than you’re good and happy. Just Smile Dammit (thanks to 94.7’s Breakfast Xpress, which celebrated its first birthday this week). I agree, we do take ourselves too seriously and we often forget the finer things in life. One of those simple pleasures and gestures for others is a smile. That’s all. When I drove down William Nicol last week, I saw the “blossoming” trees and it did make me smile. See the video below for more details and a simple song doing the rounds on the net and on radio at the moment is Avril Lavigne’s track Smile. It’s all smiles around yes? Good. #Smiledammit.

Joburg Day 2011 details:

One of the best music festivals in Johannesburg has to be 94.7′ Highveld Stereo‘s Joburg Day. The annual festival is a great way for families and friends to enjoy a day in the sun listening to some of SA’s most loved musicians. It used to be in Randburg and for the past few years it has been at the Riversands Farm just outside Fourways. Now the festival moves to a brand new venue and this one is banging. This year Joburg Day will be held in the Soccer City precinct, set against the backdrop of one of the city’s most iconic structures, the Calabash of the FNB Stadium. Now if any of you went through to the stadium last year for the soccer or rugby matches or you went to see U2, you’ll know how beautiful that stadium is. So now imagine being in the vicinity of that structure, sunshine and great music? SOLD! I’m there like a bear. And that’s even before I’ve told you the lineup for the event 🙂

Joburg Day, in tune with Santam will be held on 3rd September. The artists you can expect to see on stage include:

Freshly Ground

Prime Circle

The Parlotones

Liquideep

The Arrows

Locnville

Elvis Blue

Goodluck

Zebra and Giraffe

Lavuvuzela

Lira

Tickets go on sale on tomorrow (15 July 2011) and are available from www.computicket.co.za

The Parlotones set to open for Coldplay

This shoudn’t come as too much of a surprise to you, but if you haven’t already heard the news, SA band The Parlotones will be the opening act for Coldplay when Chris Martin and the boys hit the stage later this year. Read the official press release below:

Big Concerts is proud to announce that The Parlotones have been chosen to support Coldplay, who will be performing live for the first time ever in South Africa on Wednesday 5th October at Cape Town Stadium and Saturday 8th October at the Soccer City Complex, FNB Stadium Johannesburg. The tour is presented by 94.5 KFM, 94.7 Highveld Stereo and M-Net.

Multi-platinum selling rock band The Parlotones are known for their electric, polished stage performances delivered against the backdrop of their deftly crafted and darkly romantic lyrics. In the last 12 months The Parlotones have: released the platinum selling “Stardust Galaxies” which won Best Rock Album at the 2010 SAMA’s, performed at the Opening World Cup Concert to a billion viewers, completed a 70 city world tour and entered 3 Billboard charts in the USA. The Parlotones commented: ‘There is only one band in the World that we would support in our home country and what an honour it was to be invited by that very band. Coldplay has been an inspiration to us and we are very excited to have the privilege of sharing the stage with the greatest band in the world’

Coldplay’s songs have captured millions of fans around the world since the release of ‘Parachutes’ in 2000. A critical and commercial triumph, ‘Parachutes’ debuted at number one on the UK Album Chart and was nominated for a Mercury Music Prize. After the success of ‘Parachutes’, Coldplay began to work on their second album ‘A Rush of Blood to the Head’ (2002) which spawned popular singles ’The Scientist’, ‘In My Place’ and ‘Clocks’ winning Record of the Year at the 2004 Grammys. The third album ‘X&Y’ became the best selling album of 2005 with world-wide sales of 11 million. ‘Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends’ (2008) is described by Martin as a new direction for Coldplay, a change from their past three albums, which they referred to as the trilogy. It became the bands first number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and their first UK number one based on download sales alone.
