The year has come to an end and it has been a goodie for many of our famous friends. This week I have a few Q&As with a few familiar faces we all love and enjoy. Today’s edition features the Electro/Jazz duo, Goldfish. What wowed them this year? What’s on the cards for next year? And how can you win a trip to see them live in concert? Read on to find out more.
JVB: It has been a good year for you guys. Take us through some of your highs; your winning moments in 2013.
Goldfish: 2013 has been amazing for Goldfish. We have played some of the biggest shows and crowds around the world of our lives, released our new Album Three Second Memory, went to every continent except Antartica and had blast doing it all.
JVB: Was there a moment, an experience or something significant this year that made you go ‘WOW” or that changed your perspectives/ plans?
Goldfish: Selling out our own Festival in Amsterdam was definitely a wow moment. To have gone from playing a beach bar in Camps Bay to curating our own festival in Amsterdam with some of our favourite artists on the bill was quite surreal. Also playing Ultra Festival in Miami and coming off stage to see our website had crashed and our twitter had exploded. That just gave us a taste of the power of America.
JVB: What does 2014 hold for you?
Goldfish: We’re going to be on tour pretty much the whole year in US, UK, Brazil, Ibiza and the rest of Europe in between stints at home. Plus some very cool collab’s in the pipeline…Business as usual for the Fishies.
JVB: Any tips and/ or tricks from you to your fans to get through 2014…
Definitely check out the custom Goldfish USB stick we’ve designed available on our website goldfishlive.com
– It’s got the new album Three Second Memory on it, plus Remixes and videos…and it doubles as a very cool keyring so you don’t get caught without a flashdisc ever again. Very cool little addition!
JVB: Any last messages for your fans?
Wow, just thank you for the amazing support. It sounds cheesy but it really is amazing to have such crazy fans. They’re the reason we do this! To say thank you we are running a competition in partnership with SAhotels.com
for a Goldfish Fan to win a trip for two from anywhere in the world to Cape Town
, with five star accommodation, and to come party with us at our Closing Party of Submerged Sundays. It’s a pretty rad prize. check out our facebook
for the details.

The inimitable and iconic diva, Alison Moyet, comes to South Africa for the first time to celebrate the Emperors Palace’s 15th birthday weekend on December 13th and 14th, 2013 and to the Liquifruit Amphithteatre in Paarl as part of the Culitvaria Summer Concert series. The three concerts will feature the very best of the bluesy voiced Alison Moyet and the hits of her Electro-Pop ‘80s band, Yazoo, her personal hits of the past 28 years and from her current hit album “the minutes”An Essex girl, born Genevieve Alison Jane, to a French Father and English Mother,
Alison left school at 16 and became famous at 21 as a singer/songwriter in her band, Yazoo.
The emotive songstress emerged from the British post-punk scene in the early 1980s as one-half of the synth-pop duo Yazoo – which sold millions of albums and enjoyed a string of hits over a two-year period, including “Only You” and “Don’t Go” which fit right into the electro-pop, rage-of-the-moment in the 21st century. Moyet’s voice stood out as the formidable instrument, as throaty as Janis Joplin, and as soulful as Dusty Springfield.
When Yazoo split up, Alison then went on to a flourishing solo career and in 1984 released her debut solo album, Alf, which became a huge hit worldwide. Between 1984 and 1987, Moyet was Britain’s best-selling female solo star. Covers of “That Ole Devil Called Love” and “Love Letters” confirmed her reputation as an interpreter of classic songs, whilst the self penned hits “All Cried Out” and “Love Resurrection” confirmed her gift as a songwriter. The next few years saw more peaks with Brit Awards, topping the Billboard Top 40, a performance at the Live Aid concert and a successful 1987 collaboration with Eurythmics’ Dave Stewart on the hit “Is This Love?
She is currently enjoying great success with her acclaimed eighth album “the minutes” which shot to number 5 on the U.K. album charts. Prior to her exclusive Gauteng concerts, she will be touring the United Kingdom, Europe and America in a series of greatly anticipated concerts.
Tickets start from R295 and can be booked through Computicket on www.computicket.com for all shows or by visiting Emperors Palace on
www.emperorspalace.com or phoning 011 928 1297/1213. The show starts at 20:00 on both evenings in Johannesburg and at 19:00 in Cape Town. Culitvaria festival website is www.cultivaria.com
And then there were two… Next week #IdolsSA season 9 comes to an end and we’ll get to find who between Musa Sukwene and Brenden Ledwaba will be crowned the new South African Idol. It has been a fantastic season with some great talent and to be honest, I’m not really too sad if either one of them wins. I dig them both. I’ll say this much though, personally I dig Musa a lot. He has a presence, a great energy and he commands attention when he takes to the stage. What are your thoughts? Who are you digging? Idols 9: Top 3 Results
It’s Brenden and Musa in the tightest final ever!
The voters have spoken in the most hotly contested season of Idols SA ever and 26-year-old MUSA SUKWENE from eMalahleni and BRENDEN LEDWABA (19) from Graskop are going to be battling it out in the nailbiting Finalé of Idols Season 9.
SONKE MAZIBUKO (21) from Soweto fell at the final hurdle in tonight’s (Tuesday, 19 November) Top 3 Results Show, live from the Moreleta Park Church Auditorium in Pretoria, losing his chance to sing in the all-important final showdown.
This competition was so close that after their three rounds of performances in the Top 3 Spectacular on Sunday, Brenden and Musa were both at the bottom of the polls in one round and at the top of the polls in another, with Sonke, who has never been in the bottom three throughout the season, consistently stuck in the middle for all three rounds.
“It is always sad to have to say goodbye to a contestant this close to the final,” M-Net’s Head of M-Net Publicity and Special Projects Lani Lombard said tonight. “But that is the nature of Idols and Sonke can take comfort in the fact that we have never seen voting results as close as we did this season. It’s been a neck-and-neck race and in this final week of voting the pressure really is on like never before. It’s going to be an exhilarating Idols Finale.”

I was lucky enough to attend the annual Eat Out DStv Food Network Restaurant Awards in Cape Town at the weekend. The awards honour the biggest names and restaurants in the food business and so you can imagine the festive and delicious the awards were this year. MasterChef SA’s Kamini Pather was there, as were Food Network stars, Jenny Morris and Siba Mtongana. kykNET’s Tracey Lange, surfer girl Roxy Louw and a whole bunch of other famous faces were also there to be apart of the festivities. The event was a full 7 hours and for someone working, it was pretty heavy going but it was a treat nonetheless. Here are two videos I produced from the event:
And here are a few interviews and sound bytes with the winners:
Have you eaten at some of SA’s top restaurants? Which one do you enjoy the most?
And so they just keep on coming… Rock superstar and legend, Bruce Springsteen will be heading to South Africa for the first time at the end of January next year. He’ll be joined by the E Street Band for the three gigs; two in Cape Town (weird) and one in Johannesburg (I’m almost certain they’ll add another date here).
Are you a fan? Will you be going? Well best you take note of the ticketing information below. Tickets go on sale on the 30th of October for the Johannesburg leg, while the Cape Town sales go live on Friday the 1st of November. Prices are really good too. Trust me, you will not want to miss this one!
