One of my favourite albums of 2014 dropped at the tail end of the year. It’s the next edition in a long list of successful releases from one of SA’s most praised DJs, Euphonik and it’s called For The Love Of House Vol. 6. I can’t get enough. He knows what works on the dance floor and beyond and if you’re into house music, you definitely need to get your hands on a copy of this album.
A track off the album that has garnered a lot of attention on the charts is the one below. It’s called Love High and it features the vocals of Mpumi. Loves it:
Once Euphonik’s well deserved vacation is done, I’m hoping to get him on my show on CliffCentral.com. Stay tuned for those details and if you want to follow him on the social networks, here you go:

Let’s be frank, the weather in Johannesburg is kak. It’s cold, windy and just when we thought we’d say adios to winter, that little bitch decided to show us who’s boss. We get you, now you can go. While the wintery conditions might not be ideal for partying, people of Jozi listen up. You will want to venture off to Rosebank tonight. The Ultimix @ 6 Volume 3 tour comes to an end tonight and those involved are going out with a bang. The party is set to take place in the parking lot at The Zone, Rosebank from 9pm. R50 will get you in and on the decks tonight is the Ultimix @ 6 competition winner, Ryan The DJ. 5FM’s DJ Fresh, Euphonik, Poppy as well as DJ Kent will be attempting to raise the roof of P5 at The Zone and you know this is going to be mad cool. So be tough, be #847Strong and get on down to the Zone for one of the hottest parties of the year.
We might be heading into winter, but if there’s one thing to get you through this cold snap you can bet Fresh and Euphonik will have the answer for you. It’s that time of the year again… where DJs move to different show times or stations or the hang up their headphones. We’ve heard that Anele is moving to 94.7 Highveld Stereo and that her bestie Grant Nash is leaving radio altogether. We’ve also heard that Bailey Schneider and Mark Pilgrim will be leaving the drive time show on Highveld. So that was last week’s news. Well this week’s news goes a little like this:
Roger Goode is leaving the Saturday night slot on 5FM. He’ll now be holding down Mondays to Fridays evenings on the station. Dr Goode is going to make you feel real Goode during the week. Nice. DJ Euphonik will be taking over the Saturday slot between 7-10pm.
What happens to the 9-12, 12-3pm slots as well as the weekend shows will be interesting. That will come soon no doubt.
Damn the radio stations are working hard at the moment. National station 5FM is now expanding its power into the TV industry. Their TV show, (TV)5 debuts on Friday night at 19:30 on SABC 3. Check out the first promo above. In this clip you’ll get to see “My House” host Euphonik, Weekend breakfast show Thomas Msengana, the Top 40’s Sureshnie and Power Nights Hip-Hop DJ, C-Live. Can’t wait to watch the show!
One of South Africa’s leading radio stations, 5FM is expanding – and not in the traditional sense whereby they get more DJs and make the studios bigger. Nope, this time around they’re doing something that hasn’t been done yet. The radio station is making its way onto TV channel SABC3 in the form of (TV)5- billed as ‘The television face of 5FM’. The music, lifestyle and entertainment show kicks off next week Friday (the 4th) on SABC 3 at 19:30. It’ll be anchored by lunchtime duo Grant and Anele and will feature some of the stations other big names and features.
Other features you can expect to see on the show include Gareth Cliff’s News to Use or Lose; 5FM’s Power Nite DJs will present their relevant music genre’s top 5 tracks each week. Tyren of The Fresh Drive will also be featured in the show in the form of Tyren’s Top Five on a daily basis.
Station Manager at 5FM Aisha Mohamed says “5FM has always taken a unique approach to radio, viewing it as a brand rather than just a radio platform. 5FM aims to be a multi-platform youth offering which is accessible on many levels; (TV)5 is a part of this 360 degree approach to radio, adding an exciting new dimension to 5FM’s brand offering.” SABC3 Marketing Manager Risuna Mayimele says that (TV)5 is an exciting new addition to the channel’s Friday night entertainment line-up. “SABC 3 is excited to be launching a local entertainment programme powered by an innovative and edgy brand like 5FM. This is a powerful media platform that brings the power of radio to TV, and we believe that the fusion of these two brands will enable SABC3 to connect with the younger market in a fresh manner.”
Man oh man, here’s my dream job coming to life. I’ve been listening to 5FM for as long as I can remember and the station just keeps getting better and better. The station is always pushing the boundaries, new technologies, features; the DJs are fun, intelligent and entertaining. The station’s constant drive to stay at the forefront as a market leader in radio, has seen it throughout the years, effortlessly rebranding itself in true 5FM style. Think about it, whether it’s Radio 5, 5, 5FM Music, 5FM, people of all ages and now races have come to and still love this station. It’s more than just a radio station, it’s a brand and a culture that so many of us have come to love. In fact I remember going to America a few years back. I was out of the country for three months and because I missed the station and the DJs so much, I often streamed it live. Some of my American friends were pretty impressed with what we had to offer the world of radio and entertainment. So big up!
While we’ve seen many of the DJs on TV before, to see some of the other personalities on our screens now will be awesome too! I think this show will be very entertaining, fun and a perfect way to get the weekend going. There will be more on (TV)5 in the weeks to come- so stay tuned.
Wow. Can I leave it there? Okay, I’ll elaborate slightly then. Last night one of the most ambitious campaigns I’ve seen in a long time, all came together as planned- and barring minor issues, it all went off without a hitch. The Smirnoff Nightlife Exchange Project happened, it was real and it was a huge success. Well from what I saw in Berlin, Germany and Cape Town, South Africa (via Skype). The build up to the event might have seemed long and somewhat drawn out at times, but it really was worth the wait.
I was at the Berlin leg of the nightlife exchange and I was interested to see what elements were submitted in the Smirnoff crate by our curators, Fresh and Euphonik and how in turn the Germans had translated and executed those into something unique and memorable for the invited guests (unique but also somewhat relatable to their own nightlife). On arrival at the venue called Munze, guests were given the opportunity to ‘fess up’ in the nightlife confessions box. In this little booth, couples were asked to share all their dirty little secrets about their nights out on the town, who they’d meet, how they’d meet, what the clubs in their respective cities were like and how they differed to other places they’ve visited too. Nice idea and what’s also really cool about this is that partygoers were given a link to the video to share with their friends – and they were given a complimentary cab voucher to use after the party. Promoting responsible drinking and no driving deserves huge thumbs up. Oh and speaking about responsible drinking, the venue was scattered with buckets filled with water bottles, for those who wanted to keep hydrated throughout the night.
To the left of the Confessions Box was an informal hair studio, where revelers could go and get their hair did before going into rest of the warehouse. The floor plan was actually very clever. Get your confessions done, follow that up with a funky new hairdo, check your coat in and then head to the dance floor. Upon entry into the dance floor area, to the left was a giant screen projecting the nightlife exchange via Skype with Cape Town. Btw, Cape Town, you looked good… representing SA in true stylish fashion, good music and it looked as though it was cooking at the Bellville Velodrome. Hope the German influence treated you all well. Right back to Berlin, the Smirnoff crate was situated on the stage behind the DJ. I must admit I had a blonde moment. I asked Lizzie from Smirnoff where the crate was and after her pointing out a box on the stage, I thought to myself but that’s tiny. Turns out I was being well dumb and when I saw the size of the crate, I couldn’t help but shake my head in shame. Ha.
The first of three bars gave consumers an opportunity to try some of the South African inspired cocktails on offer; Rock Kwaito Granadilla, Afro Preppy Pineapple and of course the Smirnoff Cape Town Mule (there were others too). You’ll see the ingredients for this one on the left. Limettenstucke are limes and the Physalis is a gooseberry FYI. My German is getting better (coughs).

Months of preparation have gone into it. Ideas have been creative and now it’s time to share those ideas with the rest of the world. The Smirnoff Nightlife Exchange Project is here. Gazelle will be representing SA in Berlin and I’ll be there to catch all the action. To those who will be lucky enough to experience this, a world-first, enjoy it. Feel free to share the experience and exchange with the rest of us! Would love to hear what is crackening in your city tonight.
