Reviewing 2013 and looking forward to 2014 with Goldfish

The year has come to an end and it has been a goodie for many of our famous friends. This week I have a few Q&As with a few familiar faces we all love and enjoy. Today’s edition features the Electro/Jazz duo, Goldfish. What wowed them this year? What’s on the cards for next year? And how can you win a trip to see them live in concert? Read on to find out more.

JVB: It has been a good year for you guys. Take us through some of your highs; your winning moments in 2013.
Goldfish: 2013 has been amazing for Goldfish. We have played some of the biggest shows and crowds around the world of our lives, released our new Album Three Second Memory, went to every continent except Antartica and had blast doing it all.

JVB: Was there a moment, an experience or something significant this year that made you go ‘WOW” or that changed your perspectives/ plans?

Goldfish: Selling out our own Festival in Amsterdam was definitely a wow moment. To have gone from playing a beach bar in Camps Bay to curating our own festival in Amsterdam with some of our favourite artists on the bill was quite surreal. Also playing Ultra Festival in Miami and coming off stage to see our website had crashed and our twitter had exploded. That just gave us a taste of the power of America.

JVB: What does 2014 hold for you?
Goldfish: We’re going to be on tour pretty much the whole year in US, UK, Brazil, Ibiza and the rest of Europe in between stints at home. Plus some very cool collab’s in the pipeline…Business as usual for the Fishies.
JVB: Any tips and/ or tricks from you to your fans to get through 2014…
Definitely check out the custom Goldfish USB stick we’ve designed available on our website – It’s got the new album Three Second Memory on it, plus Remixes and videos…and it doubles as a very cool keyring so you don’t get caught without a flashdisc ever again. Very cool little addition!
JVB: Any last messages for your fans?
Wow, just thank you for the amazing support. It sounds cheesy but it really is amazing to have such crazy fans. They’re the reason we do this! To say thank you we are running a competition in partnership with for a Goldfish Fan to win a trip for two from anywhere in the world to Cape Town, with five star accommodation, and to come party with us at our Closing Party of Submerged Sundays. It’s a pretty rad prize. check out our facebook for the details.

Goldfish – Three Second Memory review

Goldfish return with their brand new album, Three Second Memory and if we use the metaphor of the forgetful creature that is their namesake, it’s as if they’ve forgotten how successful and good they were in the past and made sure that they’re back even bigger and better this time around.

The 14-track album features  vocal contributions Emily Bruce, Sakhile Moleshe and Monique Hellenberg, among others. If you listen to the radio, you would’ve heard songs like One Million Views, Washing Over Me, Take Back Tomorrow and the latest offering, Three Second Memory which features excerpts from the classic track, Woman of the Ghetto by Marlena Shaw.

The rest of the album is just as good. There’s a bit of a ‘loungey’ feel to some of the tracks, which I love. Listen out to songs like Giant Leap, Trees And Jets and Choose Your Own Adventure. It’s with songs like these that I’m taken back to Ibiza, chilling in some beach bar overlooking the ocean as the sun dips beneath the sea. Dave and Dom once again enjoyed a residency in the party capital of the world and one can only assume that experiences like that have play a part and influenced their sound with this new offering.

Three Second Memory track listing:

1. Three Second Memory

2. Followers of the Beat

3. One Million Views (feat. John Mani)

4. Choose Your Own Adventure (feat. Emily Bruce)

5. He’s Crazy (feat. Emily Bruce)

6. Away Game

7. Giant Leap (feat. Monique Hellenberg)

8. Moonwalk Away

9. Trees and Jets (feat. Monique Hellenberg)

10. Drive Them Back to Darkness

11. Take Back Tomorrow

12. Cantaloop (Flip Fantasia) (feat. Rahsaan & Gerard Presencer)

13. Washing Over Me (feat. Morning Parade)

14. Woman’s A Devil

It might be called Three Second Memory, but it is most certainly not going to be an album you forget very easily. It’s the beginning of the month, money is still there so go and grab yourself a copy… You wont be disappointed.

Help get Goldfish onto the list of DJ Mag’s Hot 100

Goldfish is one of SA’s most loved outfits. More than that they’re one of our biggest exports too. Dom and Dave have held a residency gig at Pacha, Ibiza for the last couple of years. They’ve played alongside some of the biggest dance names in the world too like mr D Guetta and Fredde le Grand. So it’s fitting that they make the list of DJ Mag’s Top 100 DJ Poll.

SAMA weekend is here, Friday night winners announced

The South African Music Awards (SAMAs) are here. This is one of my favourite weekends in the entertainment industry in SA because I love how far our artists have come. We celebrate their achievements in music, production, music videos, style, performances and overall entertainment. I’ll be heading through to the awards in a little bit for the live broadcast. We’ll get to see who the major winners are, we’ll get to see the lovely Bonang and Phat Joe get their hosting duties on, we’ll get to see who takes to the stage to perform (I have word that Loyiso and The Arrows might be collaborating) and we’ll see who wears what on the yellow carpet. Speaking of the yellow carpet, R&B singer and now double SAMA winner, LeAnne walked off with two SAMAs last night. Wearing her Funduzi gown by Craig  Jacobs, the start said, “I’m so emotional, I can’t believe this. I’ve worked so hard and waited so long to have this.”LeAnne walked off with the Best R&B/ Neo Soul album as well as the Best Producer album.
