Beyoncé is a trooper

Why is Beyoncé the most professional and ultimate performer? She keeps her cool even in the most bizarre circumstances. The star is currently on her Mrs Carter World (sans Africa) Tour. At the weekend Mrs Carter performed in São Paulo, Brazil and it was there that the star was faced with an interesting to say the least, and eager fan. While performing her smash hit, Irreplaceable, Bey appears to have been pulled off the stage by the fan. In security team jumped to her rescue, but Bey didn’t seem to phased by the incident, carrying on with the song.

Once done with the track she went back to that area of the stage and said to the fan, “It’s alright, it’s alright. Nice to meet you. Thank you, I love you, too.” What a legend! This isn’t the first incident Queen Bey has had to endure on tour. Earlier this year, while singing the song Halo… Her blonde locks got caught in one of the stage fans. While her teamed scrambled to help release her, Beyonce ever the profession carried on singing the song:

So if any artist ever considers leaving the stage for a lack of crowd support, rain, hair in fans or the like… Remember what Beyoncé did and ask yourself the question, am I really serious about life 😉

Did Beyoncé lip-sync her way through The Star-Spangled Banner?

Barack Obama Sworn In As U.S. President For A Second TermI don’t think so – and here’s why:

Beyoncé Knowles has been accused of lip-syncing her way through her performance at President Barack Obama’s inauguration on Monday. The star had the duty of singing the American national anthem, The Star-Spangled Banner. What an honour and there is no better person in my opinion to have than Beyoncé, to sing it.

The Halo singer does the anthem, and true to form, she nails it. On stage it looked like the star was having some issues with feedback or interference, so she removed her earpiece mid-set. She carried on like a true pro and in my opinion, it was the best version of the anthem I have ever witnessed. Then someone from the Marine Corps puts out a statement saying both the band and Beyoncé weren’t live and that the Grammy winner lip-synced her way through the song.

So here are a couple of questions for you:

– Do you care?

If you don’t care, that’s cool but I do. I’m an entertainment journalist, a lover of music and I admire and respect Beyoncé like no other.

– Is it a big deal?

Yes, it is a big deal. With a global audience focused on you for that performance and the trust the President has in you to sing the anthem, it is a big deal. While many artists don’t sing their songs live (we know this), the one time an artist really shouldn’t lip-sync is during the national anthem. It is possibly the highest honour one can get and it means you have the talent to pull it off. It is also the one time you really get to show that talent off in a raw, but impressive way.

I can understand artists having a back-up recording available for a number of reasons; be it stage fright, forces of nature or being sick, but come on. This is Beyoncé, one of the greatest singers and performers of our time.

So the big question then is did she or didn’t she? I really don’t believe she did. I’ve watched the clip a number of times and it looks clean to me. Sure, she had a bit of a hiccup with her earpiece and it sounds like there’s a bit of an echo or some feedback (maybe the recording), but she really looks to be singing – and well. If she did lip-sync, it is by far the best lip-syncing performance I have ever seen in my life. The famous Beyoncé-isms were there and it was a well rehearsed and flowed really nicely. It was incredible.

There is no official statement from Beyoncé’s peops, but E! Online has a statement from the US Marine Corps Media Officer. Read it here. So there you have it, I don’t believe she lip-synced, but I guess time will tell.

Your thoughts?

Watch Beyonce live at Revel highlights

A friend of mine, Lihle Mtshali recently went off to Atlantic City to see the lovely Beyoncé Knowles-Carter live in concert. Apparently Beyoncé was on stage for over two hours in which she played not only some of her biggest songs, but from some of the other leading ladies in music too. Check out the video above for some highlights including a tribute to Whitney Houston.

This woman can do no wrong can she? Less than five months after giving birth to her and husband Jay-Z’s first child, she’s back on stage doing what she loves to do and what she does oh so well. One day Beyoncé you’ll come and see us in South Africa… hopefully soon!

MTV Europe Music Awards: My thoughts

The annual MTV Europe Music Awards went down in Berlin, Germany last night and of course I expected it to be massive, entertaining. My expectations were high. Was I happy? Sorta. For me, I don’t think it was as great as they usually are. For one I thought the O2 World Center crowd in Berlin were way too quiet. When host Katy Perry tried to get them going, as did the other presenters, there were a few applauses and cheers. LAME people, lame. Perhaps many of ze German crowd don’t understand English? Is that a fair assumption to make?

The performances I enjoyed. Beyonce can do no wrong in my eyes, neither can Jay-Z, Leona Lewis or U2. Beyonce performed a rather different version of her hit song, Sweet Dream, but at the end I was kinda expecting her to carry on as opposed to just stopping and I think again it looked like an abrupt conclusion because the crowd was so half asleep! Leona Lewis performed her new song, “Happy” and she’s really good. Really really good. Greenday had the duties of opening the show and the Foo Fighters played a new song and a classic too. For me though, Jay-Zs performance of “Empire of The Mind”. Unfortunately Alicia Keys wasn’t there to sing along, but it was cool anyway. So you might be asking, how do you get better then that? How’s about Jay-Z performing with U2 at the end of the show. The awards marked twenty years since the breaking down of the Berlin Wall and when Jay accepted his award for Best Urban Artist, he said he hopes one day it will all be about music and not about the different genres. How fitting then, to have a performance of the biggest hip-hop artist in the world and the legendary rockers U2. AMAZING AMAZING!!!!

Hosting duties:
Katy Perry didn’t do too badly as a host, but imagine seeing her and her BF Russel Brand presenting alongside each other? That could be cool! Really enjoyed her opening sequence:

Quote of the night?
Beyonce when she accepted her third award of the night for Best Video. “I want to thank one person for this and that’s Jay… for putting a ring on it” Brilliant, wicked love it, love her!

Disappointment of the night?
Shakira’s performance wasn’t my favourite unfortunately. Lady Gaga not being at the awards to accept her Best New Act award. She tweeted, “Just left showstudio exhibition in london with the haus, so inspiring, fishchips+ monsterball, whiskey and sketches, let the Knight begin” BUT in her video acceptance speech she said she was in NYC….. hmm, Gaga where u at?

Biggest WTF moment of the night?
Eminem winning bBest hip-hop artist. Lame lame lame. He rips people off and that’s the best song? Um yeah man, whaever! That is such a kanye “Immaletchu interrupt” Eminem’s lame video speech moment! The Hoff and his extremely shiny jacket. I honestly saw my reflection through the TV hahaha

Kelly or Beyonce- Whose is better?

So when I first heard Beyonce‘s song Halo I was like, hang on a sec this sounds like something I’ve heard before… hmmm. I then decided to listen to my Kelly Clarkson album and there it was, the song that sounded like “Halo”. Kelly’s song is called “Already Gone” and if you listen closely below, I’m sure you’ll hear what I hear… I think 🙂 Especially at the beginning.

So you want to know what went down? Well Ryan Tedder of One Republic fame co-wrote both songs. Then someone had a similar feeling to me about both tracks. This is what Kelly told the CBC News:

“We wrote about six songs together, four or five of them made the album. It was all fine and dandy. I’d never heard of a song called Halo. Her album came out when my album was already being printed. No-one’s gonna be sittin’ at home, thinking ‘Man, Ryan Tedder gave Beyonce and Kelly the same track to write to.’ No, they’re just gonna be saying I ripped someone off. I called Ryan and said, ‘I don’t understand. Why would you do that?’”

Then Ryan responded to Entertainment Weekly saying:
“‘Already Gone’ is one of the best songs I’ve written or produced since ‘Bleeding Love’ and stands tall on it’s own merits apart from ‘Halo.’ They are two entirely different songs conceptually, melodically, & lyrically and I would never try to dupe an artist such as Kelly Clarkson or Beyonce into recording over the same musical track, the idea is both hurtful & absurd. I think when people hear ‘Already Gone’ they will hear what I hear — one of the greatest female vocalists on earth giving her most haunting and heart-breaking performance on a song she helped write. I challenge people to listen and form their own opinions.”

No word from Beyonce….

Here is Kelly’s ‘version’

And Beyonce’s:

So who dunnit it (better)? I like both artists, I love their voices. It’s unfortunate that Kelly’s song has only just been released because she will (no doubt) bear the brunt of this story. I loved her song Because Of You, but this one really makes her shine, makes her worthy of the Grammy’s and success she’s received in recent year. What are your thoughts on this scandal? Who do you prefer? Like both equally

Beyonce 'sings' horribly…

Well when someone messes with her voice and posts the song all over the web. That’s exactly what a guy by the name of Matt from Hello Hommo did with Beyonce’s “If I Were A Boy”. He admits to it, saying that he mixed the audio tracks and did it for the sake of a laugh and entertainment… I wonder if B is laughing. Her daddy aint happy, In a statement issued to E Online he says, “If no one took the time to listen to Beyoncé sing ‘America the Beautiful’ and ‘At Last’ at the Neighborhood Ball for the first dance of President Obama and the First Lady, and they question Beyoncé’s vocal ability, they’ve got be an idiot.” Will they sue this Matt? Hmmm interesting times. One thing’s for sure though, I think his version/mix is horrid and I don’t think I will ever hear that song in the same light again 🙂 Here it is:

And another one of Beyonce’s tracks… Single Ladies

Beyonce is currently in the U.K. on tour and things seem to be running smoothly. Don’t worry Daddy Knowles, I think she’s brlliant… I just wish she would come over to SA already. DAMN!

Beyonce topping charts

All the Single Ladies is at the top of the US Billboard charts. The song, taken off Beyonce’s platinum selling album, double album ‘I Am Sasha Fierce’, is also Rolling Stone’s number one track of 2008. Nice Beyonce. It’s bound to be a great year for the diva. I’m hoping she’ll finally come and do a solo tour to SA, let’s hope. Now while ‘If I Were A Boy’ and Single Ladies settle comfortably at the top of the charts, here are the two new singles off the album currently charting. In this video the first track is ‘Halo’ and the second is ‘Diva’. Here they are and if you’re a fan of the songs, be sure to check out MTN Muziq to find out how you can get your hands on the tracks:
