#IdolsSA – It’s Brenden vs Musa in the finale

Episode 26 - Musa, image 06    And then there were two… Next week #IdolsSA season 9 comes to an end and we’ll get to find who between Musa Sukwene and Brenden Ledwaba will be crowned the new South African Idol. It has been a fantastic season with some great talent and to be honest, I’m not really too sad if either one of them wins. I dig them both. I’ll say this much though, personally I dig Musa a lot. He has a presence, a great energy and he commands attention when he takes to the stage. What are your thoughts? Who are you digging? Idols 9: Top 3 Results

It’s Brenden and Musa in the tightest final ever!

The voters have spoken in the most hotly contested season of Idols SA ever and 26-year-old MUSA SUKWENE from eMalahleni and BRENDEN LEDWABA (19) from Graskop are going to be battling it out in the nailbiting Finalé of Idols Season 9.

SONKE MAZIBUKO (21) from Soweto fell at the final hurdle in tonight’s (Tuesday, 19 November) Top 3 Results Show, live from the Moreleta Park Church Auditorium in Pretoria, losing his chance to sing in the all-important final showdown.

Episode 26 - Brenden, image 02

This competition was so close that after their three rounds of performances in the Top 3 Spectacular on Sunday, Brenden and Musa were both at the bottom of the polls in one round and at the top of the polls in another, with Sonke, who has never been in the bottom three throughout the season, consistently stuck in the middle for all three rounds.

“It is always sad to have to say goodbye to a contestant this close to the final,” M-Net’s Head of M-Net Publicity and Special Projects Lani Lombard said tonight. “But that is the nature of Idols and Sonke can take comfort in the fact that we have never seen voting results as close as we did this season. It’s been a neck-and-neck race and in this final week of voting the pressure really is on like never before. It’s going to be an exhilarating Idols Finale.”

The countdown to Idols is on

Today I find myself at the Sun City complex out in the North West Province. The reason for my visit it to catch a glimpse of this year’s talent in the hit singing show Idols.  The field has been narrowed down from thousands of hopefuls to just a handful today and while I wont be able to share too much of what happens until you all see it on TV, I’m sure I can sneak a few pics of the judges and possibly some of the hopefuls who are in the running to be the new Idol.

This year I’m hoping to see a lot more soulful singers and I’ll put it out there, I think it’s time we have a female winner again. The boy’s club is cool and they’ve all done well in their respective days since Idols, but it’s time for a lady to win I feel. Look it’s based on votes and may the best person win, but this is just what I’m hoping will transpire. I’ve heard a few murmurs since I’ve been here of some of the interesting personalities you’ll get to see in this season… and I don’t mean the contestants or the judges, I mean a few TV personalities who you will love. Stay tuned, more to follow…

The contestants I saw performing yesterday were great. They’re a very soulful bunch this year and I’m glad to see that. I don’t know who went through though, I guess we’ll just have to wait and see when the show airs on M-Net and Mzansi Magic this June. What I can say is that there are a few familiar faces (seasons gone by) that are there. If you watched another reality show a few years back on M-Net, you might recognise two of the young ladies too. There’s a soccer player turned singer who will get a lot of ladies voting no doubt and then there are a few other interesting characters too. It’s going to be a great season no doubt!

Proverb to co-produce Idols

One of the most likeable and most talented guys in the South African entertainment industry has to be Proverb. He’s a rapper, a presenter turned host, a DJ, a father, husband. Now he’s adding the title of co-producer to his already long list of successes.

It was announced yesterday that the Idols host would be co-producing this season of hit show. He’ll be working alongside Gavin Wratten, starting this weekend. Being in the industry for over 12 years now, this is a natural progression for the star. He knows what works on screen, so why not be involved in the development of several ideas behind the scenes too? I think this, he will be great. I have a lot of respect for Gavin Wratten as a director and now for these two to be teaming up; I think we’re in for a treat.

If you have what it takes to be the next South African Idols, then diarise these audition dates:

Josslyn or Kerry, who will make the Idols Top 15?

What would Idols be without a little bit of a twist and some drama? No I’m not talking about Prime Zulu’s ‘Snot en Trane’ during last night’s show. I’m talking about the fact that there is currently a top 14 and as of Sunday we’ll know who between Josslyn Hlenti and Kerry Sanssoucie will make it a Top 15. During the (let’s be honest the rather painful, drawn out) hour and half broadcast last night, the judges told the two hopefuls that they couldn’t decide who was good enough to go through to the next round. So they’re leaving it up to South Africa to decide who will be there. “Hell Week” continues for Kerry and Josslyn.

I feel sorry for them. They’re both very strong, very good and actually they could be the finalists if we fast tracked to the final of this show. Alas, that isn’t going to happen I guess. So here’s what the vibe is. You have until 10pm tonight to vote for your favourite contestant. Here are the voting details:

To vote JOSSLYNN HLENTI into the Top 15, text the letter A to 37400.

To vote for KERRY SANSSOUCIE, text the letter B to 37400. Or vote for either Idol on MXit.

(SMSs cost R1,60. VAS rates apply and no free SMSs are allowed. 20 Moola per MXit vote.)

They both have interesting back stories, but I’m swaying more to Kerry’s at this point. Let’s see what happens next week then.

In the mean time, here are the other names already in the top 14: Continue reading “Josslyn or Kerry, who will make the Idols Top 15?”

My Idols favourites so far

The new season of Idols is well underway now. I must admit I tend to agree with judge Gareth Cliff when he said Polokwane lacked a bit of talent. There were a few hopefuls I liked but for the most part they weren’t great. So when I watched the beginning of the show last night, I thought to myself oh boy Durban, where did all your talent go? Well that was until some of these contestants showed up. First up you can see Jonathan Grayston (pictured above), who still gives me goosebumps! Yoh, what a pleasant surprise. Kid is amazeballs! Watch his audition here.

Prime Zulu entered the competition last year. When he sang I was sold, so were the judges. Unfortunately he didn’t last very long in the top 100. He’s now back and he has a second chance. I still think he’s got the goods to make it big. Plus his version of Beyonce’s Hello was touching. Watch his audition and let me know what you think.

16-year-old Shekhinah Donnell has a good back story. The young starlet shared her story about being adopted when she was younger. Her father encouraged her to enter the competition and boy did it pay off.

She blew every one of the judges away with her version of crack is whack Amy Winehouse’s song Rehab. She even got a hug from the normally cold-as-ice Randall Abrahams. Watch her audition now.

Another youngster who performed really nicely was Josslynn Hlenti. The 20-year-old PA entered in the hopes of hitting it big and making enough money to improve both her and her family’s lifestyle. I’ve seen her before but I can’t quite seem to place hey. Anyone who can help, that would be rad! A few other names to watch out for: Erin Fourie, Phillip Du PlessisSibusiswe Jali and according to the judges Melissa Allison too. This girl you might recognise from another reality show called High School Musical: Spotlight South Africa.

Some people you wont fortunately or unfortunately get to see too much of:

Kurt’s biggest critic Zandrie. “He doesnt haf da punch dat more English songs have for me.” Needless to say she had Unathi in tears- and I’m sure many others around the country.

Reece Jude Morgan. His dress sense is enough to make you LOL all over the place 😉 There was a girl who was told to show off her ‘range’ by removing her clothes. Her name is Paige and she wasn’t the ugliest person I’ve ever seen in my life 😉 We could see her again.

I’m told the Joburg auditions this weekend are just as good as the Durban ones. Tune in this Sunday at 17:30 on M-Net, channel 101 on DStv.

Idols SA is back

American Idol is over and in fear of suffering from Idols withdrawals, the singing contest contest with the new season of South African Idols. The show, in its seventh season, kicked off last night with the regulars ProVerb (as host), Gareth and Randall as judges, but there is no Mara Louw this year. Are you happy/ sad? I know I feel feel because one of my favourite people in this industry, Unathi Msengana has now officially replaced Mara. Unathi is no stranger to the industry. She works alongside Glen Lewis and Mel Bala on the morning show on Metro FM and has been on radio for many a year. She’s also no stranger to TV, having presented on shows like Castle Loud and Top Billing in the past. PLUS, she’s a muliple SAMA-nominated singer, who is set to release her third album soon and she has just become a mother for the second time. Congrats go out to her and hubby Thomas on the arrival of their little princess btw.

So in short, I think the judging panel on Idols is now complete and perfect. Did you watch the show last night? What did you think of the new judge? What did you think of “I can’t say no” guest judge Danny K, cold-as-ice Randall and “say it like it is” Gareth Cliff? Did you see pillow boy and the soon-to-be married couple? Holler and for more on the show, check out the official website.

Idols audition dates

It’s Survivor, Awards and now Idols season again. Survivor South Africa: Celebs vs Plebs hits our TV screens on the 24th of February; Oscars, The Grammys, the BAFTAs and more are all happening; American Idol has just hit our screens and later on this year we’ll get to see the seventh season of South African Idols. As mentioned, in this post, radio personality Unathi Msengana will be joining the Idols judging panel this year and I’m very excited to see her on our screens. Gonna be wicked. So what else is different with this season of Idols? Well the production is hitting a new region… Polokwane. M-Net Channel Manager Pierre Cloete, says it’s time to look for some new talent in a new region: “This season of Idols has seen a number of exciting new developments, and we believe that it is time to give wannabe contestants from other areas of South Africa a chance. Limpopo province is an ideal region, as we know that there are many Idols fans in the North of the country who have been unable to audition in past seasons.” Auditions will also be held on Saturdays so as to accommodate to big numbers they’re expecting this year. Jacee Badeaux and instant hit on American Idol

The new season of the hit show American Idol kicked off last week and last night in South Africa. The show has a new look and to accompany that new look are new two new judges, Jennifer Lopez and Aerosmith frontman, Steve Tyler. When I heard about these two being on the panel, I was a bit shocked that they’d been selected. I just though because they both haven’t done a lot on the music front for quite some time, but watching them last night, my perception has changed. I didn’t actually realise how successful JLo’s music career has been. She has sold in excess of 55million albums worldwide- well impressive. Steve Tyler is a legend and damn can the man say some funny things. Look he’s a bit of a perv, but damn I loved him last night. Judging by the talent we saw on TV last night, this could be a great season of the 10th installment of the singing show. One person who really stood out last night was 15-year-old Jacee Badeaux. He sang the Otis Redding’s classic ‘(Sittin’ On) The Dock Of The Bay’. Justin Bieber’s got some competition, Mini Paul Potts is coming through. Check out his audition below:

And if you missed the opening sequence, that seemed like something you’d expect to see in a presidential campaign and not an announcement of the new judges, check out the first few minutes of this clip. It was brilliant!

Jessica Simpson for American Idol?

It’s been revealed that there is a mutual interest from both the Simpson and Idols camps about the pop star replacing Mr Nasty aka Simon Cowell. You’ll remember Cowell left his A.I. judging duties behind after Lee DeWyze was crowned the winner earlier this year. So step aside Justin Timberlake, Sir Elton John and Howard Stern (actually the list of potentials keeps growing), apparently the bosses at American Idol have already had several discussion with the “Irresistible” singer.

Okay cool she’s been in the game for over a decade now, she’s beautiful blah blah. So how do you think Ms Simpson will get on as a judge on the hit show? Bearing in mind this is the star who um, couldn’t tell the difference between chicken or fish haha! Anyway she’s worked with Kara DioGuardi before, so maybe with those two on the panel, they’ll be able to find the next big thing? Auditions are due to get going in September, so I guess we’ll have to wait and see who will replace Simon.
