Kings of Leon in Jozi

This weekend I got to go and see the Kings of Leon performing live at the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg. This is the third ‘Big Concert’ I’ve attended at one of our most iconic structures in the city and it was awesome. I must admit, I’m not the biggest Kings of Leon fan but I know enough of their material to enjoy the show. Plus, when an international artist/ band comes to SA, I make a concerted effort to attend the gig because we usually aren’t as lucky as we have been this year.

I got my accreditation to take pics (video was a no-go this time) and I headed off to the stadium. There were three support acts that opened up for the American rockers. First up were the Black Hotels, a descent way for fans to get into the groove. It was then time for Shadowclub and Die Heuwels Fantasties followed Good Morning Killer hit makers. It’s really nice to see how the crowd responded to these two bands. Singing along, dancing about. One observation. It’s interesting that the Black Hotels got to open for Kings of Leon. They’re good, but quite niche and specific to a very small market I’d say? That’s just my opinion.

So let me tell you about the pit, that’s the area where media get to stand and take pictures or take video from. For the support acts it was super chilled. Nobody stops you, but when international acts come on, well that’s a whole different ballgame. Photographers are allowed to take pictures for the first three songs, (standard) and security is usually pretty hectic. With this band, it was as if President Obama was in the building. We were ushered out of the area, briefed as to what we were allowed to do and then ushered back in. The security was very tight and we had to say whether we wanted to be stage left or right. Once we’d chosen where we wanted to be, that was it. No moving around, no swapping, nothing. That is where we were for the duration of the three songs. Why the security was so tight still baffles me but whatever.

My view wasn’t too bad; I just had a camera guy on stage coming into my shot pretty often, so I wasn’t able to take descent photos of front man Caleb Followill for the first two songs. You can see some more of my photos below.

In general, their performance was great. The sound in the stadium was brilliant, the production effects were great and their set list was good enough to make everyone in attendance happy. The only thing I didn’t like about the concert was their lack of stage presence/ interaction with the crowd. Yes people will say you’re there to watch a rock show, not hear them talk a lot, fair enough. For me though, I like it when the talent interacts with their fans. It’s a sign of acknowledgment and not necessarily “I’m here for an hour. Lets just get it done so that we can get trashed afterwards”. That’s the vibe I got from Caleb, but then he does look pretty arrogant if you ask me. He has reason to be I guess. He fronts one of the biggest bands in the world. It wasn’t a major issue, but it was an observation I had. Did you go to the gig? If so, what did you think?

Jon Savage from 5FM was the MC for the night. He encouraged everyone to do a specially choreographed dance for the song Sex is on Fire. I managed to grab 13 seconds of that song. Check it out here below:

It’s Kings of Leon weekend in Jozi

American rockers Kings of Leon are in South Africa! The band kicked off their first tour to the country at the Greenpoint Stadium in Cape Town earlier this week. Now they’re heading up to the Highveld to perform in Jozi. They’ll be playing at the FNB Stadium in the City of Gold tomorrow night. Now according to the accreditation agreement, I’d only be allowed to film thirty seconds of the third song. That’s all. So instead of lugging around all that equipment, I’m rather going to focus my energy on taking some pretty cool pictures. I can’t wait.

From what I’ve heard, the concert in Cape Town was amazing. The sound was good, the energy of the band on stage was electric and the Capetonians were overall impressed. I feel the rest of us will be loving it just as much when they take to the stage at Soccer City. In the video above you can hear them talking about their first tour to SA and how this happens to be one of their biggest gigs to date. BOOM! South Africa, you represent you beautiful thing you 😉

So who’s with me? See you at the stadium tomorrow!

Grammys 2011: Lady Antebellum win Best Country Album

After a performance by Lady Antebellum, Miley Cyrus and the Kings of Leon presented the award for the Best Country album to Lady Antebellum:

“We just want to start of by saying thank you to Capital Records and EMI for making this such a big year for us. We also just want to thank God”

Jamie Foxx introduces Cee Lo Green and special guest Gwyneth Paltrow. They performed Cee Lo’s track forget you on what looks like the set of Sesame Street or the Muppets. A super performance by them two. I’m still at a bit of a loss as to why Gwyneth was asked to be the person to collaborate with him, but for the purposes it worked.

New Kings of Leon dates announced

Yesterday we were officially notified of the fact that the Kings of Leon had postponed their tour dates to South Africa and Australia. We were also told that we’d be informed of the new dates as soon as possible. Well those are out and they are as follows:

Cape Town 26th of October
Johannesburg 29th October

If you bought tickets for the March dates, hold onto those tickets because you’ll be able to use them in October.

Happiness reigns? Good let’s hope they dont pull out!
