Be the A-lister you’ve always believed you were with M-Net Movies

Okay, hands up. How many of you pretend to be an actor, a singer or both in the comforts of your car, your shower or your home? Your home becomes your set location, your car becomes your stage and it’s there that you act out one of your favourite movie scenes or belt out your best version of your ultimate song. I have, you can see it here (disclaimer, my singing isn’t grand), but you can watch it anyway. I also sometimes catch myself re-enacting a scene from a movie or a series because I’m just that amazing. There’s a point to all of this, I promise…

M-Net Movies is giving its viewers the opportunity of a lifetime: to ‘Star in your own Greatest Movie Ever Made’ and maybe win a trip to the mecca of moviemaking i.e. Hollywood!!! The movies stable on DStv has created this platform for aspiring A-listers to get their big break and big wanderlust adventure at the same time. All you need to do is this:

  • Re-enact a scene from a movie now showing on one of the movie channels (M-Net Movies Premiere (Channel 104); M-Net Movies Smile (Channel 105); M-Net Movies Action + (Channel 106), M-Net Movies Showcase (Channel 107); M-Net Movies Action (Channel 110); M-Net Movies All Stars (Channel 111) and M-Net Movies Zone (Channel 139)
  • Upload your video to Facebook, Twitter or Instagram using the hashtag #MMGreatest
  • To validate your entry, you must go to to fill out the entry form too.

The competition will run through to the 20th of August and thereafter the fun starts. 24 of the top entries will then be selected by a panel of experts. The public will then choose their top 12, who will be selected to star in a production by the highly acclaimed production company, Bomb Productions. Sidebar, this team is incredible guys and girls. They’re the brains behind shows like Isibaya and Jacob’s Cross, both of which are brilliant from production values and casting perspectives. So best you know you’re working with the crème de la crème. The script for this production will be written by Tebogo Malope, and the top 12 will co-star alongside acting greats Thapelo Mokoena, Thomas Gumede, Lalla Land’s Lalla Hirayama and Maps Maponyane when the shoot takes places on the 26th of September. #NOTKAK at all!!!

So the big question is, SHALL WE? I’m in… I know what scene will get me a couple of votes, but you’ll have to wait and see what it is. Which movie scene would you act out?

#SasfinCyclethon with Smile Foundation

As some of you may know, I’ve once again teamed up with the Smile Foundation to tackle my third 947 Cycle Challenge. It’s going to be a good race this year. I’ve spent a lot more time on the bike and I’m definitely a lot more comfortable on these wheels now. I’m also even more excited to be working with this incredible organisation again. I’ve got my Backabuddy link running for donations, and if you’re willing to be part of my campaign (big or small, any donation counts) please click here to donate.

Now as you know, training is absolutely essential for this race to happen. So the #Ride4Smiles team is at it again. At the weekend, a few of us braved the cold, rainy weather and hit up Melrose Arch for the SASFIN Smile Spinathon. What a great morning! I managed to do three hours and 80km in that time… Pretty stoked! Check out my gallery below:

Nomzamo and Maps telling us something sweet

A couple of years ago, I took it upon myself to take on the digital properties of what is now one of Mzansi’s biggest TV channels. I did so because I saw the huge potential and the growing and engaged audience. The channel gave up-and-coming producers and productions houses the opportunity to tell local stories. It also gave the established a platform to showcase their incredible productions. One such production was Isibaya. Initially the show started out as a telenovela, the second one in SA, but because the storylines resonated so well, the production values were incredibly high and the talent struck a cord with the audience, the show became a fully-fledged soapie.

The show had some big names attached to it, but the ‘newbies’ really grabbed my attention. Two names to be specific and for the purposes of this post, I’m going to zoom in on the one… Her name? Nomzamo Mbatha. Not only was she exquisitely beautiful, but also her natural acting ability and the way she brought her character to life was something so rare, to real and so refreshing to see. I hadn’t seen that in a long time. I remember regularly engaging with her on social media and like that, her profile gained momentum and traction. I also recall having to put a few names forward for another project that we were working on. The project manager at the time, Tebs also noticed her appeal, her star power and her potential. Alas, the bosses went with another name, and that’s just the nature of the beast, but Nomzamo’s star power continued to grow and sore. All of a sudden she was out at a lot of events, being dressed by top designers and appearing regularly in the press and social pages. And yet she remained humble, real and focused. I speak about focus because that’s what I believe she is. At the time, her Twitter header image had a simple, but powerful picture of an Academy Award on a black background. It’s telling. It’s out there and I believe if she continues on this tip, that little image will come to life. Her latest project is definitely taking her one step closer to that.

Nomzamo has been a regular on the small screen and now audiences can see her on the big screen, as a lead in the feature film Tell Me Sweet Something. Nomzamo is acting alongside her friend, Maps Maponyane in this sweet local rom-com. I haven’t had the chance to see if yet, but judging by the response on social media and the trending topics this weekend, I’m going to have to book my seat. In short, Mbatha plays the role of a novelist. Seeing her stuck in a rut, her friend decides enough is enough, so she takes her out on the town. At a random Jozi club she meets a celebrity model, who isn’t her usual type. But there’s something between them and that’s where the story goes.

It might be predictable, but it’s nice to have a story that isn’t about crime, drama or some of usual stories we’ve come to expect in SA. Don’t get me wrong, there’s a place for those stories and they’re important to tell, but sometimes we just need a feel good, escape from reality movie. And that’s exactly what this movie is. I was chatting to Maps about the movie earlier, and he was telling me how busy he and Nomzamo have been with promotion. Between them, he said they’ve probably had about 18 hours of sleep in the last five days, but if it means more bums on seats, it’s all worth it.

He’s a great, smart, genuine guy. She’s talented, gorgeous and wonderful… Together, they’re formidable, driven and hungry to see and do more. Maps and Nomzamo are two names you will want to watch. It’s just the beginning of a something sweet, I’m telling you that much!

Gallery: Something’s Cooking launch in Johannesburg

Are you a fan of MiCasa’s J’Something? Do you follow him on Instagram? Well if you are, you’ll know his new project (a cooking show) is just days away from launching on Mzansi Magic. It’s called Something’s Cooking and after almost two years of hold slog and getting to this point, the star and the rest of the team are ready to go. The show got its green light last night in Johannesburg. Some of J’s closest friends and industry peers were invited to the SMEG headquarters in Jozi. Check out the gallery above and don’t forget to watch the show next Wednesday on Mzansi Magic, channel 161 on DStv.

Gallery: Woolworths Fashion Convo event

The Woolworths #WWFAShionConvo took place on Wednesday the 28th of August at ClearWater Mall. This launch was arranged for the sole purpose of giving customers, celebs and a few media the opportunity to see what’s hot and trendy for the upcoming spring/ summer seasons, courtesy of Alison Page (Woolworths Trend Manager) and Grazia Editor, Danielle Weakley.

Were you not able to make the event like me? I’m going to be working on a few more details responses, but for now a tip or two from the duo includes:

  • Hot monochrome trend (that’s just a fancy way of saying black & white), which is given a fresh twist by mixing in touches of neon or bright red/pink. And this one’s not just for the ladies either, men can rock it out too.
  • Other trends include pretty florals, metallics and neutrals. And for the men, some hot tailored suits, combined with bright, fun touches. (Woolies best be giving me a good selection of suits then, ha).

Check out the gallery above to see who was there and what some of the outfits you can need to have look like.

Check out some of the pics from the The Ultimate Combination – Sexiest Men Calendar, Cosmopolitan and Brutal Fruit event held last week in Johannesburg. Congratulations to Masego ‘Maps‘ Maponyane, who was crowned Cosmopolitan South Africa’s Sexiest Man 2013.

I wasn’t able to attend, so I’ll give this one to Maps 😉
