Paralympian Oscar Pistorius appeared in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court today to bring forward his application for bail. He is accused of murdering his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp. His version of what happened was read out in his affidavit by his lawyer Barry Roux. Read it below:
“I, the undersigned, Oscar Leonard Carl Pistorius, do hereby make oath and state:
I am an adult male and a South African citizen with identity number [identity number redacted].
I am the Applicant in this application in which I seek relief from this Honourable Court to be released on bail. I respectfully submit, as I will demonstrate herein, that the interests of justice permit my release on bail. In any event, the dictates of fairness and justice in view of the peculiar facts herein warrant that I should not be deprived of my liberty and that I should be released on bail.
I make this affidavit of my own free will and have not in any way been unduly influenced to depose thereto.
The facts herein contained, save where expressly indicated to the contrary, are within my personal knowledge and belief, and are both true and correct.
The purpose of this affidavit is to provide the above Honourable Court with my personal circumstances and to address the allegations levelled against me (in so far as they are known to me), as well as to address the factors to be considered by the above Honourable Court as contained in Sections 60(4) to 60(9) of the Act.
I have been advised and I understand that I bear the burden to show that the interests of justice permit my release and that I am obliged to initiate this application. I fail to understand how I could be charged with murder, let alone premeditated murder, as I had no intention to kill my girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp (“Reeva”). However, I will put factors before the Honourable Court to show that it is in the interests of justice to permit my release on bail.
The new season of Tropika Island of Treasure kicked off on SABC1 at the weekend. The show was met with mixed reactions, not because of the content but because the sensitive issue surrounding the late Reeva Steenkamp. In case you haven’t heard, Reeva died last week allegedly at the hands of Paralympic champ, Oscar Pistorius. The bosses at SABC 1 and the production company responsible for the show decided to go ahead with the show, as they wanted to show the country who exactly Reeva was and why she was so loved.
While I get this, it still was a little off for me. The family is yet to deal with the loss, let alone bury her and so for them to see their beloved Reeva in the show must be awfully difficult. They have their reasons I guess, but the thing that really got to me yesterday is the reports of the production company was selling clips of Reeva to the foreign press for $3000 each. That for me is revolting, in bad taste and quite frankly lame if it’s just to pay for production costs (likely). If the money is going into a fund that Reeva believed in and would’ve attached her name to, then that is a different story. I’m going to go with the former though. They did put together a tribute for the star in their show, and this was very moving. You can watch that above.
This story gets worse by the day and hopefully tomorrow’s court proceedings will shed some more light on what happened in Pistorius’s home in the early hours of Thurday. Reeva will be laid to rest tomorrow in Port Elizabeth. Once again my deepest condolences to her family. HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE!
Firstly, and most importantly, all our thoughts today must be with the family and friends of Reeva Steenkamp.
Oscar Pistorius has appeared in court here in Pretoria this morning formally charged with the murder of Reeva Steenkamp. The alleged murder is disputed in the strongest terms.
These are now live and active legal proceedings which must be allowed to take their course through the process of proper investigation by the police, evidence-gathering and through the local South African judicial system.
In a short hearing lawyers representing the athlete asked for a postponement for a bail application until Tuesday next week to allow time for their own investigation into the circumstances of the tragedy, which was agreed by the Magistrate, who also agreed that Pistorius would be held in custody at a local police station.
Oscar Pistorius has made history as an Olympic and Paralympic sportsman and has been an inspiration to others the world over.
He has made it very clear that he would like to send his deepest sympathies to the family of Reeva. He would also like to express his thanks through us today for all the messages of support he has received – but as stated our thoughts and prayers today should be for Reeva and her family – regardless of the circumstances of this terrible, terrible tragedy.
We will endeavour to issue other statements as matters develop but in these circumstances I am sure you appreciate it is very difficult to answer any more specific questions. Thank you very much for your attention.
Despite this morning’s tragic events, SABC1 has decided to go ahead with the new season of Tropika Island of Treasure. The show stars a whole host of South African celebrities including the late Reeva Steenkamp, who was shot dead allegedly at the hands of her boyfriend Oscar Pistorius.
Below is a statement from Vukile Madlala, who is the Publicity Manager for the channel:
SABC1 STATEMENT ON REEVA STEENKAMP
Johannesburg, Thursday 14 February, 2013
“As SABC1; we are deeply saddened by the tragic turn of events involving one of the players on our show, Tropika Island of Treasure Season 5. Our thoughts and prayers during these trying times are with the family and friends of the dearly departed Reeva Steenkamp. Tropika Island of Treasure is scheduled to start airing on SABC1 Mzansi Fo Sho this Saturday 16 February 2013, at 18h30.”
It’s a tricky situation because the show was filmed in Jamaica last year and nobody could have ever predicted this. So the money, production costs and TV scheduling time had all been finalised prior to this horrendous incident. It will no doubt be extremely hard for Steenkamp’s close friends and family to see her in the show for as long as she was in it.
My deepest condolences go out to her loved ones during this time. More on this story to follow.
What a terrible way to start the day. Internationally acclaimed athlete and all-round nice guy, Oscar Pistorius allegedly shot and killed his girlfriend in the early hours of this morning according to Beeld. It’s believed he thought she was an intruder entering his Silverwoods Country Estate home.
Oscar is currently in police custody and will appear in the Pretoria Magistrates Court later today.
There is no further information available at this stage and I won’t be mentioning her name until it’s confirmed. If it is the person I’m thinking of, it’s a very sad day indeed.
Here is a statement from Reeva’s management:
Statement from Sarit Tomlinson, MD of Capacity Relations, Reeva Steenkamp’s Management Agency:
We can confirm that Reeva Steenkamp has passed away. We are in communication with people on the scene, please wait for official statements, as there is too much speculation at this moment in time. We will provide further information as soon as we are able to provide accurate information as to what transpired. Our thoughts and prayers go to the Steenkamp family, who have asked to have their privacy respected during this difficult time, everyone is simply devastated. She was the kindest, sweetest human being; an angel on earth and will be sorely missed.
Reeva was set to appear in the new season of Tropika Island of Treasure alongside a whole host of local celebrities. The show is scheduled to air on Saturday and according to Heat Magazine, the show will go on as planned. On the show’s website they say, “We are deeply saddened and extend our condolences to Reeva’s family and friends.”
