Any fans of MTV’s Geordie Shore out there? Well if you are and you happen to be in the Johannesburg area this weekend, best you hit the gym quickly, get your spray tans did and head through to H20 tomorrow because Holly and Scott are in town. And they’ll be there tomorrow partying hard with the rest of the H20 boychees and bints. They’ll be there from 12 and if the show is anything to go by, they wont be heading home early 😉
If you aren’t able to be there, then don’t worry too much. The fifth season of the hit show kicks off on MTV this coming Tuesday (October 1st). You can tune in at 21:15 on DStv channel 130, MTV. Otherwise check them all out on Twitter:
Be sure to use the hashtag #GeordiesdoJozi too! I’m hanging with the two later today. If you have any burning questions for them, drop me a tweet or a comment below.
The new season of Tropika Island of Treasure kicked off on SABC1 at the weekend. The show was met with mixed reactions, not because of the content but because the sensitive issue surrounding the late Reeva Steenkamp. In case you haven’t heard, Reeva died last week allegedly at the hands of Paralympic champ, Oscar Pistorius. The bosses at SABC 1 and the production company responsible for the show decided to go ahead with the show, as they wanted to show the country who exactly Reeva was and why she was so loved.
While I get this, it still was a little off for me. The family is yet to deal with the loss, let alone bury her and so for them to see their beloved Reeva in the show must be awfully difficult. They have their reasons I guess, but the thing that really got to me yesterday is the reports of the production company was selling clips of Reeva to the foreign press for $3000 each. That for me is revolting, in bad taste and quite frankly lame if it’s just to pay for production costs (likely). If the money is going into a fund that Reeva believed in and would’ve attached her name to, then that is a different story. I’m going to go with the former though. They did put together a tribute for the star in their show, and this was very moving. You can watch that above.
This story gets worse by the day and hopefully tomorrow’s court proceedings will shed some more light on what happened in Pistorius’s home in the early hours of Thurday. Reeva will be laid to rest tomorrow in Port Elizabeth. Once again my deepest condolences to her family. HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE!
Last night yet another reality TV show launched on South African TV. I must admit I’m getting a little over reality TV. It’s like a rash… it be everywhere and most people believe they can have a reality show now. Snore. Having said that, when I first heard about this one, I knew something would be different. Dineo Ranaka is a mother, first and foremost. She’s also a well known television personality, a former radio host, a fashion designer and a mogul in the making – and that is the premise of the show. It’s called Dineo’s Diary: Mogul in the making. The show documents her life as it stands and how she aims to become an entertainment mogul in Africa.
Now for someone who aspires for more, who strives for greatness, immediately I was drawn to this show. While I’m nowhere near this scale of success as yet, it will come and watching the show last night, it just reaffirmed that for me. Dineo is incredible. She is beautiful, she is damn smart and driven. Unlike other reality shows we’ve seen in the past, there is no bullshit here. She says it like it is, she wears her heart on her sleeve and if she’s going to do a reality TV show, she’s going to give you the reality of it all. So she’s doing a photoshoot, she’s meeting her business partners, she’s arguing with her boyfriend (like normal human beings), she’s busy being a mom and a daughter… and that was just in episode one. The season promo aired shortly afterwards and it just looks fantastic.
Check out the promo:
From a production point of view it was shot fantastically. The treatment was carefully thought out, the style of the show is great and it just looks slick. He’s knows this, but I’ll say it publicly. Director Graeme Swanepoel of New Vision Pictures is on top form. He’s knows how to make great reality TV shows in SA. He has Cream Cartel, Running with the Reps, Dineo’s Diary under his belt and a few other projects in the pipeline so watch out for his name.
If you want to catch Dineo’s Diary, be sure to watch it every Wednesday at 19:30 on Vuzu, channel 123 on DStv. Oh and you’ll get to see her gorgeous little boy too. He’s too cute for words!
Kim Kardashian is officially off the market. The E reality TV star and businesswoman wed her NBA man, Kris Humphries in front of some 450 invited guests at the weekend. While we might not have made the list, we will most definitely get to see the wedding on E soon. Here’s a sneak peek at the bride and her beloved. She looks beautiful (as to be expected) and that little Mason. How cute? Mazel Tov to the happy couple.
This is great news for all of you who have had Simon Cowell withdrawals. Pay channel, M-Net has secured the rights to showcase reality TV phenomenon X Factor U.S. The new US version of the show will kick off in early October following the conclusion of Idols season 7. In addition to seeing Paula Abdul, L.A. Reid you’ll also get to see the lovely Nicole Scherzinger on the judging panel.
Unlike Idols, this is open to everyone who has (or thinks) they have a singing talent. Groups, solo artists, young, old… anyone can enter. Oy vey, you know that this is going to be well entertaining. The Americans have some real gems (good and bad) and those gems all make for some hilarious TV. What will the winner of this competition win? A whopping $5 million record deal. How’s that for #winning, wow! Past winners of the hit show include the likes of Leona Lewis, Shayne Ward and Alexandra Burke. While Ward and Burke have enjoyed a significant amount of success internationally, Lewis shot to instant stardom globally after winning this show. Well that together with her massive hit “Bleeding Love”. So you know this show isn’t messing around.
On bringing the X Factor to local audiences, Channel Head Pierre Cloete said: “Following the success of American Idol we can’t wait to see the entertainment X FACTOR U.S. has in store.”
My thoughts? I think this is a big scoop for the channel. I look forward to watching this and it’s going to be interesting to see how the next season of American Idol does alongside the X Factor. I also think a show of this nature will be embraced very well by local audiences, so stay tuned for X Factor SA… I feel. Hey, production peops, if you decide to do a local version, I’ll be happy to audition for the hosting duties!!
The X Factor kicks off on M-Net and M-Net HD on DStv this October.
The Hills might be over, but this show could be the next best thing. It’s MTV’s latest reality TV drama called Clifton Shores. It shows a bunch of young American women moving down to South Africa for what appears to be a once in a lifetime opportunity, to be party hosts. They’re working closely for their billionaire boss. It has all the makings of a great reality show, that isn’t scripted *coughs*. Beautiful women, bulky, toned guys, drama between friends all set on the magnificent backdrop that is Cape Town, the Mother City, South Africa. Clifton beaches are amazing but who knew they could hold so much drama too 🙂 The show is expected to start later this year on MTV. As soon as I have more details on the cast and the broadcast details, I’ll bring them to you.
So last night saw the end of yet another hugely successful season of reality TV show Big Brother Amplified. Nigeria’s Karen and Zimbabwe’s Wendall walked off with a whopping USD 200 000 each, when host IK made the announcement on the live broadcast on DStv channel 198. I’ll admit I didn’t watch the show much this season, but I’ve heard from several people that it was a great season. I’ve also heard that a lot of people weren’t happy with how the votes went ie. Wendall won and Luclay from South Africa didn’t. Now let’s break this down a bit shall we:
– If you vote, then you have a reason to moan and be upset that your favourite didn’t win. If you didn’t then you need to shut up. You have no leg to stand on. There are a lot of the latter in that category. You therefore cannot bitch and moan.
– The continent of Africa is big. This season had some 14 nations represented in the house. That means that those nations are all voting. Some have bigger populations than others, granted, but viewers also vote for who they like. While South Africa might’ve liked Luclay, other nations preferred Wendall and Karen to him. That is just the way the cookie crumbles.
– It’s not fair to pull the race card, which I’ve seen a lot of on Twitter and it’s also not fair to say this is rigged. How can it be? The votes are there, clear as day. The votes have been audited and thoroughly checked. There is no cheating involved like many others have suggested. Get over yourselves!
A few other questions:
If Wendall was so boring then why did he win?
If you think this is the “Nigeria show”, then you obviously missed the season where Richard from Tanzania won right? Stop making baseless assumptions like this. It’s wrong!
Let’s all stop being spoiled sports, face the music and accept that these two won and the others didn’t.
I thank you 🙂
