Is E! Entertainment looking to Africa for content?

Chris Wall Media - CMBonang - Sml-7

The answer to that is yes! And it’s about time… E! ENTERTAINMENT Television has announced its very first African production. It’s called E! News Special and it will launch this September… (Feels similar to Top Shayela, don’t ya think?)

The 12-part special will showcase the lives of some of the continent’s most influential personalities including Queen B aka Bonang Matheba. Terry Pheto, Shashi Naidoo and AKA are some of the others tipped to be part of the show. I think they should be looking at some of the talent out of Kenya and Nigeria too. D’Banj, Mo Abudu, IK, Davido are a few who come to mind. Who else do you think they should look at?

We are delighted to launch our first-ever local production on E! in Africa and add E! News Special to the channel’s exclusive line-up of high-quality, original programming,” said Colin McLeod, Managing Director, Emerging Markets, NBCUniversal International Networks. “We are confident that the profiles of local celebrities will resonate well with our audience, making E! the TV destination for the pop of African culture.”

I’m really excited about this. If you know me, you’ll know how much I love E! and what they do. I’d love to be part of this and hey, who knows… Maybe it’s time to get my pitch on 😉 The series will premiere on E! (DStv Channel 124) in South Africa on Thursday, 10th September at 8 pm.

Anyone spotted Ryan Seacrest in South Africa?

Ryan Seacrest in South AfricaLast week a very dear friend of mine said she’d heard a rumour that entertainment mogul, Ryan Seacrest was out and about in Cape Town. For someone like me, who is also in the field and who once had aspirations of working with, interviewing or growing an empire like Seacrest’s, I was hooked. The first place one generally checks to confirm such news is on social media. These stars love to share pictures of places they visit etc, but Seacrest’s handles were all pretty quiet… Until this morning.

The news is/ was true. Seacrest was in the fairest Cape recently. It looks as if he was here with his family and celebrated his birthday in Mzansi. He also did the traditional ‘safari’ and spent some time out at the Lalela Project, an organization that provides educational arts to those less fortunate than ourselves, by empowering the youth to start thinking creatively, as well as awakening the entrepreneurial spirt.

So has anyone spotted the star in our beautiful land? I pushed my luck and sent an interview request on Twitter and Instagram… you know how that goes, but you’ve got to be in it to win it I guess 😉

What’s next for Filipa

1. You’ve had a couple of days to get used to winning this contest. How are you feeling now?

Fantastic! It has been so incredible! I am very tired and living on strong coffee, but I wouldn’t change that for the world!

2. Do you know what’s next? Prizes?

The prize is the accolade of winning and being featured on A trip to LA would be good! The publicity I have received over the past month has been priceless and a good introduction into the music business.

3. You won the contest, which is massive, but if you could ask Ryan Seacrest for one other thing, what would that be?

I would love him to take me under his wing and “validate” me so that powerful people in the music business take note of me!

4. Your favourite One Direction boy band member?

Do I have to chose? They’re all so cute! But I’d have to say Liam.

5. You’re focusing on releasing a single soon. Can you tell us a little more about it, in terms of the direction you’re taking, the sound and who you’re working with.

I am going to be continuing on the pop route, but with a slight alternative twist to it. I am working with some great song writers including Garth from CrashCarBurn and Daniel Baron and have put out a brief to all the publishing companies who are sourcing possible material for me to consider. Influences would the from the likes of Lorde and Lana del Rey. Brian O’Shea and Crighton Goodwill will be producing my single.

6. You have a global platform at this stage. Besides SA, where else would you like to take your music to and perform?

Everywhere! I think it is everyone’s dream to crack America, England and the rest of Europe. But I’d like to reach as many people from all corners of the globe as possible.

7. Some of your favourite artists are?

I listen to anything from Bocelli to Lorde, even ABBA. I like what is on radio at the moment though.

8. How do people keep up to date with you?

My website is being built at the moment, but on Twitter (@FilipaAlexandr8) and on Facebook

Filipa wins cover contest

FilipaLast week I told you about 18-year-old Filipa, the young star from South Africa who caught the eye of Ryan Seacrest’s team when she covered One Direction’s, Story of My Life. The competition saw hundreds of hopefuls vying for the title of best cover. Round by round the numbers were narrowed down and last week, Filipa became one of seven competing for the title. Well here’s a development for you…. SHE WON THE WHOLE DAMN THING!!!!

She beat out X-Factor UK’s twins Jedward (who placed second) and X-Factor US finalist Josh Levi (who placed third), among others to take top honours. The news was announced yesterday and here’s what the young starlet had to say:

“Winning this competition has been the highlight of my career so far and to have the support from the media and public both in South Africa and overseas has been mind blowing,” said Filipa.

What’s next for her? Well winning a competition like this, which was set up by an entertainment mogul like Ryan Seacrest one thing’s for sure… the stars are the limit for Filipa. I can’t wait to see more!

SA’s Filipa through to the finals of cover search competition

FilipaSouth African starlet, Filipa is through to the finals of‘s best cover search competition. The competition started three weeks ago, when the entertainment mogul’s team called for the best cover of One Direction’s Story of My Life. Each week, fans got to vote for artists from all walks of life and from different parts of the globe and Filipa has steadily received enough votes to make it through to this point.

She’s now through to the finals, alongside X Factor UK finalists Jedward, X Factor US finalist Josh Levy and The Vamps. Voting lines close on the 16th, with the winner being announced on Monday 17 February. On making it through to the finals, she said: “I am very excited and honoured to be in the final round and have to thank the local media for backing me and, of course, the South African public whose continuous voting and undying support has kept me in the competition.”

Here’s how you can help her further, by wining the competition. Go to, click on the Contests tab, then to the One Direction cover Final contest tab. Vote for Filipa from there. You can vote twice a day ie every twelve hours. So vote now and then vote just before you sit down to watch your favourite show on TV 😉

Audio: Gaga chats to Ryan Seacrest

Lady Gaga has been quiet for some time now, but she’s back and ready to ARTPOP the living daylights out of you. Entertainment mogul, Ryan Seacrest sat down with Gaga to find out more about her artistic direction for this album, her feelings about Katy Perry‘s new single and the subsequent ‘competition’ between the two and more. Have a listen.

Golden Globes 2013 red carpet

I’m up and at it and getting ready for the 70th Golden Globes Awards. I’m currently watching the E! Entertainment Live from the Red Carpet special with Ryan Seacrest and Giuliana Rancic. So far I’ve seen the lovely Adele looking great in Burberry. Nicole Kidman, Marion Cotillard, Julianne Moore were all looking pretty too.

Kate Hudson went black because she “decided to go for comfort”. She is presenting the Best Supporting Actor Award tonight. Stacey Kiebler is wearing Armani Privé “fresh off the plane from Paris”. It’s nice to see that despite the rumours, her and George Clooney are still going strong. And while they’re going strong, stars such as Jennifer Lawrence and Taylor Swift walked the red carpet alone after they both announced their ‘freedom’ last week. I haven’t seen Taylor, but single is working for Silver Linings Playbook actress.

Sofia Vergara always turns heads on the red carpet, and once again she’s looking great. We’re used to seeing her wearing colour on the carpet, but tonight she decided to go with a black number because she loved it. Denzel Washington brought his daughter along tonight. He is nominated in the Lead Actor category. What a cool cat, looking suave in his suit as is Leonardo DiCaprio.

Almost show time…

Terrence Jenkins joins E! News

Ryan Seacrest…. Out, Terrence Jenkins… in. Seacrest has stepped down from his co-hosting duties on E! News. The entertainment mogul will be focusing on producing more great programming through his production company and on hosting American Idol. I also read something not so long ago about him starting his own network, but there is no further info on that at this point. So with Seacrest’s departure comes some new talent and energy in the form of presenter and actor Terence Jenkins.

Jenkins or Terrence J as he has been referred to has been hosting BET’s “106 & Park” video countdown for the last few years. He now moves to E to join Giuliana Rancic as the new host on E! News. The changes come into affect as of the 12th of November. He and Giuliana will host the show during the week, while Jason Kennedy and Catt Sandler hold down the weekend duties. In a statement on E! Online, he said, “I’ve always had a passion for the wide spectrum of pop culture that E! News covers so well; I can’t wait to get started. I’ve had a great career so far, and it¹s all been building toward this. And then getting to work with great people like Giuliana and the entire E! News team just makes this seem like an even more perfect opportunity.”

It’s sad to see Seacrest go, but we haven’t heard the last of him and I think Terrence will do a sterling job. BTW, I’ve already sent in my interview request 😉

Phillip Phillips wins American Idol

Phillip Phillips is the new American Idol. He was announced as the winner during the two hour live finale from the Nokia Theatre in down town Los Angeles.

The star-studded live performance had the audience up on their feet on more than one occasion. Rihanna performed her latest single Where Have You Been on the stage. This is the latest single off her new album Talk That Talk, which is such a lekker track.

Jennifer “JLo” Lopez also performed tonight. She will be hitting the road soon to promote and perform tracks from her LOVE album, as well as many other songs from her long, illustrious and very successful career. This has been a good season for JLO. She was named the most beautiful and the most powerful celebrity in the world. Steven Tyler has been a little subdued this year but that doesn’t mean his stage presence is gone. His performance alongside the rest of his Aerosmith band mates was rocking, as to be expected.

Also on the stage tonight, Jordin Sparks (who has had a really good week), the legendary Neil Diamond and Reba McEntire, Fantasia Barrino and  CCR’s John Fogerty. A great performance that is a must is the one between Jessica Sanchez and Jennifer Holliday. The two performed “And I Am Telling You” and oh my word was it good. The soulful and the petit divas show off their amazing vocal abilities and that performance scored them a standing ovation. AMAZING!!!

The top 12 guys performed a medley of Bee Gees songs as part of a tribute to the late Robin Gibb, who died at the weekend. They performed tracks like To Love Somebody and How Deep Is Your Love. It’s nice to see that the Idol bosses jumped on this. The news broke too close to the live broadcast of the Billboard Music Awards, so there wasn’t a musical tribute. So well done to the AI bosses.

Two other highlights to watch out for:

– The Phonebook song as performed by this year’s contestants. This was to honour Randy’s statement, “Dude you can sing the phonebook”. It was classic, loved it.

– The wedding proposal. Season 5 finalists Diana DeGarmo and Ace Young were caleld to the stage by host Ryan Seacrest. Little did we know, it was because Young was about to propose to his Idols sweetheart. Naturally she said yes. Very cute this was.

This is the performance in my opinion that won it for Phillip. It’s his debut single Home:

It’s very Mumford & Sons- ish… Love it, especially the marching band vibe too!
