Next week the top 8 guys will sing for your votes. Lines close on Monday and the results will be announced on Tuesday evening. Then the following week, the girls will take to the stage in Pretoria, all in the hopes of getting one step closer to one of the most coveted titles on South African TV.
So last night the Idols Top 8 tackled the R&B theme. I missed the show, but I’m catching up on all the action via the official site. Here’s what I thought of last night’s performances (in no particular order):
Erin- I said last week I was a bit worried about her taking on Beyonce‘s ‘Halo’. Watching her perform it, I was pleasantly surprised. I think she did a nice version of the track. Much better than I expected.
Mark– Eish! Not so sure about this one. It’s safe but dare I say it was a little boring.
Kelly- Great performance. I think that could save her because her vocal wasn’t the best. I think she’s great though so I hope she’ll get to perform again. Just one observation, her accent is quite apparent when she sings. Anyone else noticed that?
Freddie- Freddie the free spirit took on the late Amy Winehouse‘s ‘Rehab‘. You can see he tried channeling his inner Amy (yes we all have one) but I don’t think he pulled it off as well as I’d hoped he would.
Dene- She chooses so well. For this show she tackled Christina Aguilera‘s ‘The Voice Within‘. She did a great job at this song! She amazes me. So young and yet so powerful! Great work!
Dave- Who knew a rocker could do Marvin Gaye‘s ‘Sexual Healing‘ so well? WOW!!! That was amazeballs!
Crushanda- She sang Whitney’s ‘Learned From The Best’. Clearly she did. How are those pipes? Girl can hit the right notes… right up top there. Nice!
Lefa- He took on one of my favourite artists of all time, Mr John Legend and a song that cemented him as a top player in the music biz (No Ordinary People). He did it well, like I expected.
So who should be in the bottom three this week. It’s tough. If I could pick a bottom four I’d go with Freddie, Mark, Kelly and Erin… It’s based on votes though, so let’s see how it goes!
So since the top 14 was announced a few months back, this billboard has been posted in the M-Net offices. It shows all 14 and week by week, the booted out contestant would get a big fat OUT plastered across his or her face. It’s now down to two… Lloyd Cele and Elvis Blue. Now look carefully at the poster. You’ll see Elvis is in the centre and Lloyd is two contestants to the right of your screen. Is this pure coincidence or will it reflect tonight’s verdict? I’ve been a follower of Lloyd since I saw his audition in Durbs- so I’ve been rooting and voting for him. They’ve both done really well and they should be commended for their efforts to get this far. It’s a big deal but there can only be one. Ask me what I think will happen? I’m behind Lloyd, but I think Elvis might just take it. Let’s find out tonight at 7pm when the two hour special airs on M-Net. Performances from Loyiso, the top 14 and of course a few other surprises!

So last night viewers got to see who progressed into the finals of Idols season 6. The two lucky souls? L’loyd Cele and Elvis Blue. Well done to both guys and unlucky for Sindi. In last week’s shocking turn of events, with all the regional DJs and their listeners agreeing that Sindi would be the one to leave, voters had other plans. It turned out that Boki was the one with the least amount of votes- saving Sindi for yet another week. This week the same results were generated, only now the votes matched up to what the radio polls had suggested. The final takes place this coming Sunday, with the results and announcement of the winner happening on Tuesday night in a two hour special. My votes will be going to L’loyd Cele. He has been consistent and I think he is the better one of the two. That isn’t to say that Elvis isn’t talented. He will have a successful career, but I feel like L’loyd is more deserving. You can agree to disagree with me. That’s cool.
The two will be embarking on a whirlwind tour of some of the major cities this weekend. This is where they will be
– Fury William Nicol Ford dealership in Parkmore, Johannesburg, on Saturday morning before
– They will then be performing live at the Curry Cup Final at the Absa Stadium in Durban! That’s a big deal hey- seeing as though they’re both from the opposing provinces.
– On Sunday they will be at Canal Walk in Cape Town Sunday afternoon!

Just on a side note, judges, Gareth Cliff, Mara Louw and Randall Abrahams have for weeks praised Sindi for her original look and her powerful voice. Well now I call on them to guide Sindi even more as she enters into her career in music. If she’s as good as they claim, then all parties concerned will reap the rewards. This is, in my opinion, what has been missing in this competition since its inception. Once the voted out contestants leave the competition, they’re left to fend for themselves. Sure it is a tough industry and they will need to get used to it, but I really think to make the show uphold its reputation as a nurturing platform for fresh talent, the judges should do a “life after Idols” sort of campaign. Mara especially should be spearheading such a drive.
Let’s see what happens going forward. I must say this bunch of contestants has been by far the strongest in a while!
The biggest shocker of the singing competition, Idols came last night when 21-year-old singer Boki Ntsime was voted out of the competition. I say shocker for a number of reasons:
1. He clearly had a lot of crowd support in the audiences- week after week.
2. He has never been in the bottom three since the top ten
3. All 5 regional radio station polls and the judges picked Sindi as the one to go last night
4. Besides Lloyd, in my opinion, Boki is the next best singer
I was and still am really pissed that he left and before you say anything, yes I did vote for him. I think he’s the real deal. He’s hugely marketable as an artist, he talented and fun. I said this last night on Twitter and I’ll say it again today, Jennifer Hudson and Chris Daughtry are proof that winning the competition isn’t everything. Sure it’s nice, but if you have the passion and the drive to make this your career, then it can be done. Those words are directed at Boki. I hope he comes across this post and I hope he takes this into account. He rocks! The platform, the exposure given to these contestants is priceless. Anyone who doesn’t use this platform is dumb and not quite cut out for this industry! Still peeved!
Tonight sees yet another hopeful singing for the last time on the Idols stage and after Sunday night’s show, I think it’s going to be very close. Could there be another upset? Possibly. WARNING: there can be no bitching or moaning about your favourite leaving the show, if he or she leaves tonight and you haven’t voted. Just saying (call me Mara ha). It is true though, there’s always an uproar about favourites leaving early. Well they can’t be favorites if they’re being voted out now, not so?
So dim the lights, cue the music… who will be in the bottom three and who will be one step closer to the title of South African Idol? Here’s what I think:
Bottom three- Pieter, Jamie-Lee and Jess. Jamie- Lee has been in the bottom three a couple of times, as has Jess, but it looks as though they have a big following. So by default it should be Pieter West. I dig this guy’s voice, but sadly in my opinion I don’t think he did that Jesse Clegg song any justice. Askies. My gut is saying there might be another upset- Boki, L’loyd, Adeline, Elvis will be fine. Sindi? Eish, I like her but let’s see what happens. If you can’t handle the suspense tune in just before half 7 to find out who leaves tonight. If you can watch the long, drawn out broadcast, you’ll get to see the Gang Of Instrumentals performing live. Nice!

Adeline Mocke will be singing a song by Nianell called “Who Painted The Moon”.
JVB: good song choice. It’s a difficult song, but it’s different to what she did last week and it will show of a different side to her voice. Versatility.
Boki Ntsime is taking on Liquideep’s “Fairytale”
JVB: Clever. We know how the votes are going and I think Boki is choosing good songs that will keep the voters interested in him. This song has huge crossover appeal and I hope he’ll crack it.
Jess Yallup chose the Just Jinger ballad “What He Means”
JVB: Jess has a dedicated and loyal fan base. Add a Just Jinger song into that mix and you’ve got something good going on. I’m not too familiar with this song, but I’m curious to hear her version
Elvis Blue will be taking on Malaika’s “Destiny”.
JVB: Interesting!! Tshidi from Malaika has quite a high range. So I wonder if Elvis is going to change the arrangement like he has done in previous weeks.
Jamie-Lee Sexton takes on the Clout hit, “Save Me”
JVB: Hmmmm… I don’t know this song. I don’t know how many young voters will know this song either, but she has been saved enough times to assume she has quite the following so let’s see.
Sindi Nene will be performing her version of Mango Groove’s hit “Moments Away”
JVB: Nice song choice. Mango Groove is always popular and I think her voice will suit this song. Surprised she’s not doing a Brenda Fassie song though. Especially with all the recent comments from judges Mara and Randall…
Lloyd Cele takes on the Parlotones’ hit “Push Me To The Floor”
JVB: Again, like Boki, this is a clever song choice. It’s contemporary, fun and nice to jam to. I think he’ll do it justice.
Pieter West chose Jesse Glegg’s “Today”
JVB: Great. Great. Great song choice. Like Jesse, Pieter has a raspy voice. I might be jumping the gun here, but this could be his week to shine!
So tonight another Idols hopeful gets chopped from the line-up, but the question is who will it be? It’s going to be an interesting night, but I think the person who might be going home will be…. Pieter West. Sorry, but I don’t think he was strong enough on Sunday when he performed Seal’s version of ‘Knock On Wood’. I don’t know, that’s my opinion, but check out his video here and let me know if you agree or not. Who will be in the bottom three besides Mr West? Well I’m going to go with Jamie-Lee and Jess.
I can’t wait to see Tamara Dey and the rest of the Flash Republic playing their new song later too! Honestly, Tamara is one of the best performers I have ever seen on stage. She’s entertaining, commanding and energetic. True superstar!
Vodpod videos no longer available.
It’s gonna be an interesting week for the Top 10. Elvis Blue has a random, but fun song choice. Sindi and Boki have picked well I feel, as has Jess and Jamie-Lee.
So tonight two more hopefuls will get the boot. Who will they be?
I think Adeline, Elvis, Lloyd and Gail will be safe. I don’t want Funeka to go either. The two I think will be bouncing tonight?
It’s a competition I guess, but I do feel bad for putting their names down. What are your thoughts? Let’s see what happens at 7pm tonight on M-Net!
