Today I woke up at 6am… I went to gym, had a quick breakfast and then headed off to my German lessons. Out of habit, I always check my social media networks in the morning. It seemed like another normal day and a lot of my industry peers were en route to or already in Cape Town for the annual J&B Met. I had a phone interview with Power FM’s Pabi Moloi at 12:30, so I excused myself from the class, took my iPad and had another quick scan of the social networks. My first stop was Instagram, to see what people were wearing to the Met etc. Unfortunately the first thing I saw was something I honestly still cannot believe. The news nobody wants to see – or really expected to see either. The news was that Top Billing’s Simba had passed away! I had no details or confirmation on what had happened, so I really was hoping it was some horrible misunderstanding. Unfortunately not.
Simba, together with a very close friend, was sadly killed in a car accident yesterday. From what I understand, he was traveling to the airport with his father and a friend. I don’t know the circumstances or what caused the accident, but Simba sadly lost his life in the crash. Words honestly escape me. When I chatted to Pabi on air, I felt like I was trembling, choking up. I’ve met and hung out with Simba on several occasions. I’ve also seen him do his thing in a professional capacity and let me tell you he is the ultimate professional. So good at what he does and such a gentleman doing it. His stardom really was booming and with the Top Billing crew embarking on another presenter search journey, the new hopeful has a lot to live up to. His charm, his big smile and warm presence will sorely be missed. He had just 26 short years on this earth, but he did and achieved a lot in that time. Let it be a lesson to all of us… Live life to the fullest, each and every single day! It can be cut short at any time.
My condolences go out to his family during this time. May you Rest In Peace Simba!
Bonang Matheba added a sexy lingerie line to her name earlier this month. The Top Billing presenter has collaborated with top retailer, Woolworths to create Distraction By Bonang. In the pictures I have seen online, the star looks incredibly gorgeous and hey, if you’re a lady wanting to look and feel as good as Bonang, or you’re a boyfriend, girlfriend or husband who would like to spoil the lady in your life for Valetine’s Day, then best you head on down to Woolworths. Check out this interview Bonang did with Women24 and see what she has to say about the line and more.
What else does B* have in store for us this year? She never disappoints, so let’s see!
If you know me, you’ll know that traveling is one of the most dear things to me. It’s one of the most wonderful things anyone can do and I’d love to do a lot more of it. In fact, I plan to. Right now though, it isn’t about me. It’s about the awesome presenting twosome that is Jeannie D and Janez Vermeiren. The two return to our screens tonight for another season of the hit show, Top Travel. Now this is kak huh? Imagine getting paid to travel the world and share your experiences with millions of viewers. Terrible I tell you, just terrible 😉 It’s a treat to watch these two on camera together though, so expect fun times.
“We are delighted to welcome back such a popular, entertaining and informative show to our classy line-up of leading shows and we hope viewers will stay captivated with the breath taking travel experiences that will be dished out on a weekly basis,” said SABC3 Marketing Manager Risuna Mayimele.
Here’s a short synopsis of what you can expect tonight at 20:00:
The first episode looks back at what took place in Season 2, before Janez and Jeannie take off to Venice. While in Venice, the two will engage in glass making and silk making, and indulge in 5-star dining and accommodation. During their stay they will also visit and tour some of the most popular historical locations in Venice, such as the Piazzo San Marco. The two will then hop aboard the luxurious Orient Express and indulge in a one-of-a-kind travel experience on their journey to London.
More on the season to and their travel diaries to follow in the weeks to come. For now though, do yourself a favour and follow these two on Instagram… and die of jealousy.

Mr. South African Andrew Govender spotted at the #WWFashionConvo event
The Woolworths #WWFAShionConvo took place on Wednesday the 28th of August at ClearWater Mall. This launch was arranged for the sole purpose of giving customers, celebs and a few media the opportunity to see what’s hot and trendy for the upcoming spring/ summer seasons, courtesy of Alison Page (Woolworths Trend Manager) and Grazia Editor, Danielle Weakley.
Were you not able to make the event like me? I’m going to be working on a few more details responses, but for now a tip or two from the duo includes:
Hot monochrome trend (that’s just a fancy way of saying black & white), which is given a fresh twist by mixing in touches of neon or bright red/pink. And this one’s not just for the ladies either, men can rock it out too.
Other trends include pretty florals, metallics and neutrals. And for the men, some hot tailored suits, combined with bright, fun touches. (Woolies best be giving me a good selection of suits then, ha).
Check out the gallery above to see who was there and what some of the outfits you can need to have look like.
Top Billing’s Jeannie D and Janez, together with a whole bunch of other celebs have pledged to go shirtless until the new Springbok jersey is unveiled on the 12th of April. You’re allowed to do the same too – in fact it’s encouraged, so participate in it and for more information, join the convo on Twitter #Bokday or visit them on Facebook: www.facebook.com/springboks
I’ll happily do this shirtless thing… next year, when my gym has paid off, ha! Fun times though, nice campaign.
Congratulations to Jonathan Boynton-Lee, the new face on the hit show Top Billing. Boynton-Lee was named the winner of the My TopBilling Dream Presenter Search last night. He beat out finalists Zama, Chemendran, Lynelle and thousands of other hopefuls to land the job so many (including me) dream of.
I didn’t watch the show religiously, but at first when I saw Jonathan I thought to myself here we go again. Let me tell you twenty minutes into the show my perceptions changed. He and Lynelle were by far the most natural. They weren’t overdoing it like their fellow finalists and they seemed the most grounded. When Jonathan did his interview with upcoming superstar (true story) Paige Mac, my views were completely swayed. He was honest, sincere and the interview was great. Plus he played piano while Paige sang. Winner.
I was torn between him and Lynelle, but at the end of the day the judges and the viewers voted – and it’s votes that count. So Jonathan was named the winner and after what I saw, I’m happy about it. I think he’ll do very well on the show. On winning the competition, Jonathan said, “It was pretty nerve-wracking. My mom was there and you know how it is when your mom’s around – since I was a little boy I always wanted to make her proud.”
Executive Producer, Patience Stevens said, “This year was particularly hard to choose a winner as we had such talented finalists, but ultimately Jonathan won us over. Right from the start when he first auditioned in Johannesburg we recognised something special in him – especially the way he spoke to us from the heart – but like the others nine finalists, he was put through his paces until we were absolutely sure he was exactly what we wanted for Top Billing.”
I’m hoping to get an interview with Jonathan in the next few days, so stay tuned and congratulations to him.
Once the dust has settled I’m also hoping they’ll find a spot for Lynelle on the show… I’m just saying 😉
Congratulations to Top Billing presenter and entrepreneur Janez Vermeiren who confirmed to You Magazine that he is engaged.
According to Channel 24, the star, who has been dating Brazilian model Juliana Vasconcelos for a while now, popped the question on Christmas Day. “I popped the question while we were hiking on Table Mountain. We both cried like babies!”
So Top Billing is known to show the weddings of the rich and the famous… This year at least four of those weddings are bound to be from their own stable. Janez joins Jeannie, Jo-Ann and Dhiveja in gearing up to say their “I-Do’s”. All four of them are awesome, talented and their respective partners are a lucky bunch. Good luck to them all!
Be sure to check out Top Billing tonight. The best of the 2011 good life is on point again. See the synopsis below:
“We visit Tanit Phoenix in L.A. and find out all about her budding career as a Hollywood actress. Dhiveja learns some dancing moves from Kenny Wizz, a professional Michael Jackson impersonator. South African celebrities from model Adeline Mocke, to blogger Seth Rotherham and DJ Nigel Pierce cook up the taste of summer. Get your recipes online: http://www.topbilling.com . Lyndall speaks to Naomi Watts about her role in the movie Fair Game. And see why former Top Billing presenter Angelique Schoeman has a different surname now, and why she is over the moon.”
