The Daily Show’s Trevor Noah on Orlando shootings

The Daily Show’s Trevor Noah had some pretty harsh, but true statements to make recently when talking about the tragic Orlando shootings. 49 people were gunned down in a club in the early hours of Sunday, by a man claiming his allegiance to ISIS. There are several other claims that the man himself was gay, but nothing has been proven as yet. One thing is for sure, the level of hate (religious, sexual and/or issues related to race) prevalent in the world is beyond scary.

So while Americans come to terms with what is being coined as the worst mass shooting in its history, there’s clearly a lot of work that needs to be done in that country when it comes to gun control. One thing is for sure, the level of hate (religious, sexual and/or issues related to race) prevalent in the world is beyond scary. Thoughts and prayers go out to the victims and their loved ones left behind as a result of yet another senseless act of terror.

Trevor Noah makes his debut on The Daily Show

Trevor Noah made history last night (a couple of hours ago, this morning or wherever you are really) when he took over the hosting duties of the hugely popular, The Daily Show on Comedy Central. Looking poised, calm and collected, Noah took the role in his stride and made an impressive debut, if I say so myself. Some of the American news outlets aren’t impressed, but that was to be expected. haters gonna hate, but for me, I couldn’t be prouder.

If you’re in SA, you’ll get to see the full episode at 9 pm tonight, but if you can’t wait that long, have a look at the first eleven minutes above 😉

Love it, well done Trevor!

Watch SuperSport’s “Our Hearts Are In It” promo

The countdown to the Rugby World Cup is on and judging by some of the pre-WC games, we’re in for a treat. You may know me as an entertainment and lifestyle blogger, who has now become a triathlete, a keen fan of the outdoors and nutrition, but what you might now know is that I was a rugby player too. I played A-team, B-team, C-team and 6ths – that’s how well it went as I got older, haha, but I did love it. Saturdays at King Edwards was always a fun time.

So now as we make our way towards this year’s World Cup in England, loads of activations, experiences and of course marketing campaigns have popped up. This one has to be my favourite so far. It’s a promo by the world-class SuperSport and their promo is entitled “Our Hearts Are In It”. There is very little dialogue, but the use of visuals of former greats like Francois Pienaar, Breyton Pulse and Chester Williams, together with the likes of PJ Powers, Trevor Noah and Minister Fikile Mbalula make for a very powerful message. 1st promo for The Daily Show with Trevor Noah released

It’s a known fact now that Trevor Noah is the new host of Comedy Central’s The Daily Show. He is the first South African to achieve such, and I’m extremely proud of this incredible progression in his career. I think he’ll bring a lot to the table and he’s perfectly capable of holding down the hosting duties. So may the countdown begin!

Obviously the hype will start to build now and so with that in mind, the channel has just released its first promo for the show, which kicks off later this year. Check it out:

Can’t wait to see him in action.

Trevor Noah shows us how to dream REAL BIG

On Monday news spread across the Net about South African comedian, Trevor Noah being named the next host of The Daily Show on Comedy Central. The 31 year old will take over from the highly acclaimed Jon Stewart later this year. This is big…. REAL BIG.

There are only a handful of South African stars who have cracked the notorious American market, including:

  • Actress Charlize Theron
  • Actors Sharlto Copley and Arnold Vosloo
  • Grammy winners, The Soweto Gospel Choir and Ladysmith Black Mambazo
  • Supermodel Candice Swanepoel

And now Mr. Trevor Noah! So why is this such a big deal? Well for a number of reasons.

For one, Trevor isn’t American – obviously. There have been several murmurs online with people saying it isn’t fair that a woman wasn’t given the role. According to Comedy Central they considered both men and women, but Trevor was the one who really stood out. Some really bored people who also decided to trawl through his 8000+ tweets to try and find some dirt on him. They found a few from 2011 and 2012, that have now caused a major stir. Blah blah blah… He’s a comedian who pokes fun and anyone and everyone, including himself.  Do comedians always take the moral high ground? Do they never offend? Thought so, so these haters must just stop hating and JBS. He brings in an international audience and potentially newer, more compelling content that isn’t totally America. I think that’s what the talk show scene needs.

Trevor must be the youngest personality to be given such a gig. So that’s also huge, but if we look at his rise to global fame, we can see how well and cleverly crafted this career move was by him and his team. Trevor has been doing stand up comedy for quite some time now. He has traveled far and wide and picked up a huge following in the process. He pokes fun and everyone and his whit really has won over millions. He not only hosted a radio show in SA for a short while, but he also had two relatively successful seasons of his talk show, Tonight with Trevor Noah. He was clearly keen on that format and perhaps he was already gunning for a bigger platform like the Daily Show, after the show came to an end in SA? Hence his many gigs and hours, days, months spent in the US. After just three short appearances on The Daily Show, he clearly wowed and impressed enough because this is where we are now.

So while many will no doubt look and analyze at the brand that is Trevor Noah in more detail, there’s one thing that really stands out for me. He has once again inspired millions of South Africans (young, old, black, coloured, white, gay, straight) to dream big, set their goals and aspirations high and go for it. It is possible and it can be achieved. Just work hard, hustle harder and make your destiny becomes your reality. I lost focus of my goals a few years back, but I’m back on track now and I’m not holding back.

I’m so incredibly proud of Trevor Noah and the other maybe lesser-known South Africans doing so well abroad. You’ve inspired, you’re making us aspirational and you deserve the success you’re so rightfully enjoying. We will support you all the way and know.

Gola and Moosa jet off to Just For Laughs Comedy Festival

Riaad 4Big up to Loyiso Gola and Riaad Moosa. The two funny men will be jetting off to Montreal, Canada along with a crew from Comedy Central to participate in the Just For Laughs Comedy Festival soon. The festival takes places from the 20th to the 24th of this month.

This will be Riaad the “Comedy Doctor’s” first time at the festival, while Gola takes to the stage for a second time. On heading back to the Just For Laughs Festival, Gola said, “I’m really excited to be attending the Montreal Just For Laughs Comedy Festival for the second time. I thoroughly enjoyed my experience last year and with the acts on the line-up, I can see it being another great festival this year.  With many thanks to Comedy Central Africa – I’m really looking forward to attending with Riaad Moosa and given that Trevor Noah is also taking part, it will certainly make things more exciting!”

Here’s what Riaad had to say,  “Thanks to Comedy Central for sponsoring me during Ramadaan while we’re fasting.  I think that’s why they chose a Muslim comedian…they’re going to save the budget on food.  I’m so excited about the festival: I hope they understand my Cape Town accent…but if they don’t, I’ll use a Cape Town swear word on them!”

Now if you’re stuck in this part of the world and you’re wondering how on earth we’re going to get to see these two in action, well sit tight. Comedy Central will film highlights of their trip for comedy special “Comedy Central Presents Loyiso Gola & Riaad Moosa Live at Just For Laughs in Montreal”. It will air in December on Comedy Central.

Not only do you guys have some of the best shows on the channel, but you’re really putting SA comedy and the comedians on the map by trying new, innovative things!! Okay, now that the Comedy Central plug is done, we can get on with the business of this post.

In light of what I’ve mentioned above, Comedy Central’s first Roast is happening in September. The controversial star that is Steve Hofmeyr will be roasted before an audience at Gold Reef City on the 11th of September. Who will be doing the roasting? Well the hilarious and lovely Kuli Roberts will be joined on stage by John Vlismas and Casper de Vries. The news gets better. Comedy giant Trevor Noah will be holding down the Roastmaster duties and this is a massive scoop for the channel. Trevor has enjoyed a lot of success in the US this year and so to get him back in SA to do the first ever roast is awesome. Good on you Comedy Central (plug again).
