Reviewing 2013 and looking forward to 2014 with Goldfish

goldfishlive-300x300

The year has come to an end and it has been a goodie for many of our famous friends. This week I have a few Q&As with a few familiar faces we all love and enjoy. Today’s edition features the Electro/Jazz duo, Goldfish. What wowed them this year? What’s on the cards for next year? And how can you win a trip to see them live in concert? Read on to find out more.

JVB: It has been a good year for you guys. Take us through some of your highs; your winning moments in 2013.
Goldfish: 2013 has been amazing for Goldfish. We have played some of the biggest shows and crowds around the world of our lives, released our new Album Three Second Memory, went to every continent except Antartica and had blast doing it all.

JVB: Was there a moment, an experience or something significant this year that made you go ‘WOW” or that changed your perspectives/ plans?

Goldfish: Selling out our own Festival in Amsterdam was definitely a wow moment. To have gone from playing a beach bar in Camps Bay to curating our own festival in Amsterdam with some of our favourite artists on the bill was quite surreal. Also playing Ultra Festival in Miami and coming off stage to see our website had crashed and our twitter had exploded. That just gave us a taste of the power of America.

JVB: What does 2014 hold for you?
Goldfish: We’re going to be on tour pretty much the whole year in US, UK, Brazil, Ibiza and the rest of Europe in between stints at home. Plus some very cool collab’s in the pipeline…Business as usual for the Fishies.
JVB: Any tips and/ or tricks from you to your fans to get through 2014…
Definitely check out the custom Goldfish USB stick we’ve designed available on our website goldfishlive.com – It’s got the new album Three Second Memory on it, plus Remixes and videos…and it doubles as a very cool keyring so you don’t get caught without a flashdisc ever again. Very cool little addition!
JVB: Any last messages for your fans?
Wow, just thank you for the amazing support. It sounds cheesy but it really is amazing to have such crazy fans. They’re the reason we do this! To say thank you we are running a competition in partnership with SAhotels.com for a Goldfish Fan to win a trip for two from anywhere in the world to Cape Town, with five star accommodation, and to come party with us at our Closing Party of Submerged Sundays. It’s a pretty rad prize. check out our facebook for the details.

Watch Rihanna’s Take A Bow

One of my favourite Rihanna songs has to be this one. It’s called Take A Bow and it’s taken off her album, Good Girl Gone Bad, which is an absolute ripper of an album. The song peaked at number one on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart  in May 2008, when it jumped a massive 52 spots to land at the coveted number one spot. Check it out below:

BTW, that album was released way back in 2007.

And another BTW… Rihanna is making her way to South Africa. It’s official, the Diamonds World Tour will be in Johannesburg in four days time!!!

A news update from me

If you know me, you’re a follower of this blog or on some of the other social media platforms, you’ll know I’m into all things pertaining to music, entertainment and lifestyle. It’s an industry I’ve been in for over seven years now and throughout those years I’ve been afforded many incredible opportunities to travel, interview some of the biggest names in the game and to cover many high profile events. It has been great, hard work (contrary to what many might believe) but awesome nonetheless.

My hours are very irregular and an 8-5 quite simply doesn’t apply to me, but it’s the game I chose and I’ve enjoyed it thoroughly. However, in the last two years my priorities have shifted somewhat. Going to every single event you’re asked to attend is impossible and sleep has become a luxury. I’ve also realised that as I get older, I need to take care of me. So I’ve traded all night parties for early morning runs, swims and even cycles. I eat better, I try and avoid the cocktail food at the events and I try and squeeze in as much sleep as I possibly can. In other words I’ve finally found the balance I’ve been longing for.

Recently, I’ve become more interested in triathlons, fitness and nutrition. I’ve invested in some expensive gear, showing how committed I am to testing myself. I recently bought a Suunto Ambit watch, which I’m using more and more now and learning too. I invested in a wetsuit for them triathlons and my Nike running shoes are being put to the test a lot too. “Witness the fitness” huh? Talk about a complete shift, but it’s all for the best I tell you. I realised that I’m getting wiser and so my body is changing. I therefore have become more aware of what’s good to eat and what isn’t It’s interesting how these things go.

I’ve also been a consumer of a brand called FUTURELIFE for quite some time now. It’s delicious and from what I gather, the sporting industry approves too. As long as I’ve been a consumer, I’ve become a follower too and to see how this brand has grown which has been great. A couple of weeks ago I saw an interesting tweet that made me interact with the brand more so than what I usually do.  Little did I know that this interaction would lead to a little partnership, which in turn has lead to this…  This week I was invited to be a lifestyle ambassador for the brand, and I couldn’t be happier.

As I mentioned, nutrition is a field I’ve become very interested in and so to work with a brand that is arguably at the forefront of all things healthy, is a natural fit. Look, I’m no professional athlete. I’m an average Joe, who works long hours, exercises when I can and eats normal quantities and food groups like you.  I participate in many events and outdoor activities across a variety of disciplines. I’ll be sharing my FUTURELIFE journey with you for the next couple of months, trying their new products, speaking to those responsible for ensuring their smart nutrition for life payoff line is exactly that. And who knows, I might even grab some interview time with some of the other ambassadors. I hope through this journey, you too will learn a thing or two. Sharing is caring J

GTA to support Rihanna on her SA tour

The Rihanna Diamonds World Tour is coming to SA in less than a month. The star will be bringing the Diamonds, the glitz, the music and of course her superstar status to our sunny shores. CANNOT WAIT!!! It’s going to be a great concert and despite her not doing any press or media while she’s out here, my media friends and I will catch a glimpse of her. If you want a press conference and you agree that she should be doing some media on her first headline tour of SA, then leave comments, tweet and Facebook her… Lets get this going shall we 😉

So it’s always a big question as to who the support acts will be on the tour and it was announced yesterday that Rihanna has requested that GTA continue on with their supporting duties. So they will be heading out to Mzansi this October too. GTA is made up of Matt Toth and Julio Mejia.

Here’s a little bit more information on the duo:

Dedicated to their music, they stay holed up in their bedroom studio building beats that can set off any kind of dance floor. Producers without borders, their catalogue of sounds span the gamut without limitations. They’ll experiment with trap music, house, moombahton, funky electro, booty bass, salsa, big room, anything they can put their flavor on. With “Death to Genres” as their battle cry, their mission is to set the room on fire and get all the asses clapping, every time.

GTA’s future sound has them sought after some of the biggest names in the dance music game. They’ve had releases on Diplo’s Mad Decent, Laidback Luke’s Mixmash and A-Trak’s Fool’s Gold Records. They’ve remixed various artists from all genres, including Michael Woods, Trinidad James, Deadmau5, Wolfgang
Gartner, Clockwork, Laidback Luke and A-Trak.

Armed with endless creativity, a tireless work ethic and a fierce dedication to their craft, GTA are carving their name into the minds of dance floors freaks everywhere, and you can count on them to deliver the goods, each and every time.

To provide a teaser of what’s set to come for fans, GTA have released the next volume of their much-loved series of mixes, ‘Death to Genres’. Titled ‘Vol. 3 Made in America, the mix is influenced by some of the fellow artists that joined the Miami pair at Jay Z’s very own curated festival, Made in America, across Labor Day weekend. The artwork, designed by seven-year-old rap portraitist, Yung Lenox, fits in perfectly with the genre-less and playful vibe evident throughout the hour long mix.

I must admit, I’ve never heard of them, but I’m always open to new music and new artists and hey if they’re good enough for Rih Rih huh? 😉

Justin Timberlake ready to Take Back The Night

Justin Timberlake is back in a big way. His latest album hit the number one spot, (rightfully so) back in March and ever since the release, he has been churning out them hits. Well JT said that The 20/20 Experience album wont end there. Instead it continues… Justin will be releasing another album later this year and here’s the first little teaser from the man himself. #TakeBackTheNight… Expect some club bangers here!

Sidebar, I’m putting it out into the universe but I will be going to see Justin Timberlake somewhere in the world very soon. Mark my words!

President Obama heading to SA

American President, Barack Obama and the First Lady will be heading out to the African continent next month. They will be traveling to South Africa, Tanzania and Senegal from the 26th of June to the 3rd of July.  Read the full statement of the trip below:

“President Obama and the First Lady look forward to traveling to Senegal, South Africa, and Tanzania from June 26 – July 3.  The President will reinforce the importance that the United States places on our deep and growing ties with countries in sub-Saharan Africa, including through expanding economic growth, investment, and trade; strengthening democratic institutions; and investing in the next generation of African leaders.

The President will meet with a wide array of leaders from government, business, and civil society, including youth, to discuss our strategic partnerships on bilateral and global issues.  The trip will underscore the President’s commitment to broadening and deepening cooperation between the United States and the people of sub-Saharan Africa to advance regional and global peace and prosperity.”

I got to see Michelle Obama back in 2011, while she was out here for some work. She was graceful and lovely, everything we expected. I’m sure he’ll be as charming when he heads here too. Looking forward to it.

He is one of the most well known and well respected football players in the world. More than that, he is one of the most famous athletes in the world… It’s been a pleasure watching what David Beckham has done for the game of soccer, but yesterday the 38-year-old announced his retirement from the game.
