Idols Top 8 song choices

Tonight’s Idols Top 8 spectacular should be absolutely awesome. The Idols stars will be singing songs from some of the biggest films in Hollywood. They will be mentored by South African-born film composer Trevor Jones, so you know this is going to be good. Here are the song’s you’ll be seeing later tonight on M-Net and Mzansi Magic:

BRENDEN LEDWABA  [@brenden_praise] – Kate Bush’s “This Woman’s Work”, from the 1988 John Hughes romantic comedy She’s Having A Baby, starring Kevin Bacon.

JVB: I’m not familiar with this song, so I don’t have any expectations really. I just know he’ll do it well 😉

BUNNY MAJAJA [@BunnyMajaja] – Seal hit “Kiss From a Rose” from the Batman Forever movie soundtrack in 1995.

JVB: She keeps choosing well and this is one of my favourite songs of all times! Cannot wait to see this one.

CHRISTINA WILLIAMS [@_c_williams] – Adele’s big Oscar-winning ballad from last year’s James Bond adventure, Skyfall.

JVB: Big, big song… Bold choice. Lets see how she handles this one.
CRYSTALENE NAIR (24) from Durban [@CrystaleneNair] – Whitney Houston hit “Waiting To Exhale”, from the groundbreaking romantic drama of the same name directed by Forest Whitaker.
JVB: Another big song by one of the biggest voices we’ve ever had the pleasure of enjoying! I’ve always been nervous for people who choose Beyonce, Whitney and Mariah, but I’ll keep an open mind.
INNOCENT MABUSHE [@innocentmabushe] – Phil Collins hit “Two Hearts”, from the soundtrack of the 1988 British true life crime comedy Buster, starring Collins himself in the lead role.

JVB: Fun song choice. I expect a great performance, over and above the vocals.
MUSA SUKWENE[@musathevoice] – Brian McKnight ballad “Win” from the 2000 biographical flick “Men of Honor”, starring Cuba Gooding Jnr and Robert De Niro.

JVB: I’m becoming a fan of Musa. He has a great energy and his singing comes naturally, so I have high hopes for him with this song choice.
SONKE MAZIBUKO [@sonke_mazibuko] “Go The Distance” from the 1997 animated comedy “Hercules”, which was covered for the movie soundtrack by Michael Bolton and by Ricky Martin for the Spanish version.

JVB: Wasn’t the cheese done two weeks ago? Haha. This should be interesting…

ZOË ZANA [@zoe_zana] “Lady Marmalade” cover by Pink, Christina Aguilera, Mýa and Lil’Kim from the 2001 Baz Luhrmann movie Moulin Rouge!

JVB: Nice, playful song. I think it suits Zoe’s personality perfectly. I’m just a bit worried about all the different ranges she’s going to dealing with because this song was all about who had the bigger pipes, longer higher notes and the battle of the divas in my opinion. I look forward to seeing her interpretation.

I’ll be catching up on these performances after the Rihanna concert 😉

Watch: “Celebrate” music video ft Whitney Houston & Jordin Sparks

The late, great Whitney Houston might not be with us anymore but her legacy, her voice too. Later on this year we’ll get to see the star in the upcoming movie Sparkle. One of her last recordings was a song called Celebrate. It’s a duet with young Jordin Sparks. The song was produced by R. Kelly and is taken off the Sparkle soundtrack, which is set for release on the 30th of July. Check out the video above and for more on the movie check out the official site:

Watch Beyonce live at Revel highlights

A friend of mine, Lihle Mtshali recently went off to Atlantic City to see the lovely Beyoncé Knowles-Carter live in concert. Apparently Beyoncé was on stage for over two hours in which she played not only some of her biggest songs, but from some of the other leading ladies in music too. Check out the video above for some highlights including a tribute to Whitney Houston.

This woman can do no wrong can she? Less than five months after giving birth to her and husband Jay-Z’s first child, she’s back on stage doing what she loves to do and what she does oh so well. One day Beyoncé you’ll come and see us in South Africa… hopefully soon!

Jordin Sparks performs “I Will Always Love You”

If you missed it, here is Jordin Sparks performing at the Billboard Music Awards. She paid tribute to her co-star and the late, great Whitney Houston. For more on the awards, click here.

2012 Billboard Music Awards

02:00- The Billboard Music Awards are live. The show opens with party rockers, LMFAO and a medley of some of their biggest hits including the Shuffle song (Party Rock Anthem), Sorry for Party Rocking and I’m Sexy and I Know It.

02:05- Modern Family‘s Ty Burrell and Julie Bowen are the hosts for the award. I love these two. The showed their “cred” by showing us their hip-hop video. Julie makes a superb video ho 😉 Ty has it down… yo. They then went into a country track with a series of Billboard beeps

02:10- Julianne Hough presents the Social Artist of the Year. The award goes to Justin Bieber. “Thank you. First of all I just want to say how much of a blessing it has been. The past three or four years growing up in front of everyone. The Internet is where it started for me and I want to thank all my fans. Thank you so much to my mom, my dad and to God. Thank you so much, fans I love you, everybody”.

02:19- A short tribute to Robin Gibb, who lost his battle to cancer earlier.

02:20- Katy Perry gets the Spotlight Award, which was presented by Lisa Marie Presley. In addition to thanking her record label EMI for their ongoing support, Perry said, “The people that have the power, so I want to say thank you to the glittering and gorgeous fans out there. Thank you my ‘Kitty Kats’. I want to say one last thing. The real rockstar here is my grandmother. She’s 91 and she’s from Las Vegas, I can’t wait to go and do shots with you after this.”

02:24- Kelly Clarkson debuts her new song “Dark Side”. She’s looking gorgeous in her red dress.

02:32- The Wanted take to the stage. They’re performing their track Chasing the Sun.

02:38- Miley Cyrus presents the Best New Artist Award to Wiz Khalifa. He scored four top ten hits on Billboard last year. Here’s what he had to say, “I got to thank God first. God is amazing. I also want to thank my mom first, my dad, everyone who lets me do this. I’m up here shaking man. Atlantic for letting me do what I do. All the DJs. My beautiful fiancé because she’s my world. Everyone for supporting me. Thank y’all”.

02:44- Brandy introduces “her boy” Chris Brown. He is lip syncing and very badly if you ask me, but his dance moves make up for it I guess.

02:49. Natasha Bedingfield is up to show homage to the late great Donna Summer. The tribute was very short and in my opinion lame. They cut to a “coming up” clip. I know this is live TV and time is short, but wow they could’ve done a lot more to honour the Queen of Disco.

02:55- Time to look back at 22-year-old Taylor Swift’s very successful year (well and career). She is Billboard’s Woman of the Year. On accepting the award from Zooey Deschanel “That was so nice. The first time I ever saw my song on the Billboard chart I was 16. That seems like forever ago. Thank you to everyone. I’m so humbled by this. Thank you for Chris Chrisopherson and Zooey Deschanel for coming out. Thank you to the fans.”

03:00- The Far East Movement introduce the legend that is Usher. He’s performing his new track Scream.

03:12- Jason Derulo is up now Hot 100. He presents the Billboard Hot 100 Song of the Year to LMFAO for their song “Party Rocker Anthem”. On their win the twosome said, “This is amazing. This is a dream come true. We want to thank Ian Fletcher our manager. Q, Sky Blue baby. Jimmy., the DJs. Dance music is back baby”. What would the awards be if the two didn’t thank each other, “I want to say thank you to you man. I love you man. And the fans. If you believe in yourself no matter what they say. You can do what you love.”

03:15- Ty Burrell has been inoculated for “Bieber Fever“. That’s right it’s time for Bieber to perform his track ‘Boyfriend’. The sound is crap, he sounded crap… The performance was cool. His performance was followed by Carly Rae Jepson, also out of Canada.

03:30- The virtual versions of Ty and Julie went on a tour of Vegas. They visited Gordon Ramsay’s restaurant, the spa, Caesar’s Palace, The Venetian, the Four Seasons and other places in the city. Fun times and Sophia Vegara’s viritual double made an appearance too.

03:31- Wiz Khalifa presents the award for Top Duo or Group. Before presenting the award, he wanted to thank the Beastie Boys. LMFAO wins this one too. ”

Yeah. I love this. I love everybody here. I love everyone who loves music man. It’s like you think of what you want. We used to dream about this moment. We had an Easter egg trophy and we were like thank you for this. I just really want to thank the Party Rock crew. You guys are all amazing. Sky Blue, be be you. We Love you.”

03:35- Carrie Underwood is up on stage now to perform her track Blown Away. Looking regal and beautiful in red, like her fellow American Idol friend Kelly Clarkson.

03:43- Gladys Knight is up to present the Male of the Year. The award goes to Lil Wayne. He couldn’t be there apparently so she accepted on his behalf. Swizz Beatz welcomes to the stage Linkin Park. It has been a while since we’ve seen the rockers on a stage like this. Their new album drops soon and I predict it’s going to be a winner. There are rumours doing the rounds that they’ll be in SA in the not too distant future, let’s wait and see.

03:55-Eric Bennett and Monica present the award for Best R&B to Chris Brown. Bennett obviously had to use the platform to promote his new album. Is that the only way people will actually know about it? Nobody cares dude, so sit down! Brown was stoked and grateful to all in Team Breezy. His speech was then followed by a performance by the lovely Katy Perry

04:05- Whoopi Goldberg is hear. “Like so many people around the world, I adored Whitney Houston”. She remembers meeting Whitney at the Nelson Mandela tribute concert in London. John Legend and Jordin Sparks are up to sing for Whitney. He’s leading the tribute with a beautiful rendition of “The Greatest Love of All”. Fantastic. Jordin Sparks is now singing “I will always love you”. Superb performance from Jordin, really fantastic!

Whoopi passes on the award to Bobbi Kristina and the rest of the Whitney family. “This is truly an honour. We thank you for honouring Whitney. We thank you Billboard, Jordin, John. Tonight the one person who should be accepting this award is the one Whitney loved most. Her daughter Bobbi.”

Bobbi Kristina said, “I just really want to say thank you to everyone who supported us through it all. Not just through the hard but the good too. I’m just blessed to have been in such an incredible woman’s life. I thank you all so much”.

04:21- Cee Lo Green is up now. There’s a soldier dancing around with his crouches. His leg has been amputated but damn that isn’t stopping him from breaking it down. They’re performing “Fight for your right to party” in honour of Adam Yauch of the Beastie Boys fame. Now this is what I’m talking about. Does it take two amazingly talented fallen stars to pass on in order to have performances like this?

04:27- Taio Cruz presents the award to the Battle of the Bands winner. He’s wearing his sunglasses indoors, what a chop. Anyway. I don’t know who Patent Pending is, but they’re rocking the stage.

04:36- Gavin Degraw introduces my girl Nelly Furtado, who is performing her new track “Big Hoops (Bigger the Better). It’s love. I love her and the native Indian American influence! I’m happy now!

04:46- Alicia Keys up. She says, “I am here tonight to say thank you Stevie. Thank you for bringing us joy. Thank you for bringing us so much soul. I’m here tonight to honour Stevie Wonder with the Icon of the Year award.”

The icon takes to the stage to perform alongside Alicia. He says, “Didn’t she sound incredible? Alicia Keys. Alicia love, lets keep it real. My birthday was last Sunday. I want you to give me a birthday gift. I want you to sing me Empire State of Mind a Capella,” which she does.

He then accepts the award. “I wanted to say to all of you. Alicia, everyone in the audience. Every single person this award belongs to you and to the Almighty God. We’re in a place where we have to commit ourselves to one thing and that is to love. Love will always prevail over hate and peace over war. We have approximately 7 billion people around the world and I would like you to put your best life forward. We can change the world by being as one. Please”

Watch: Oprah interviews Bobbi Kristina

It has been a month since Whitney Houston’s sudden passing. If anyone has lost someone dear to you, you’ll know that a month on things still don’t feel real and that fact that that person is no longer with us is still hard to comprehend. The constant flow of visitors to your home slows down, the phonecalls and messages aren’t as frequent. You’re slowly but surely starting to feel that loss, but also that you need to start moving forward. Now taking this into account, I really take my hat off to Whitney’s only daughter, Bobbi Kristina. Whitney Houston funeral- Cissy Houston took the world to church today

The late, great Whitney Houston will be laid to rest tomorrow. The funeral service is currently underway in the New Hope Baptist Church in Houston’s home town of Newark.

The late, great Whitney Houston will be laid to rest tomorrow. The funeral service is currently underway in the New Hope Baptist Church in Houston’s home town of Newark. In addition to Whitney’s mother, her daughter, her ex-husband and the rest of her family, stars like Oprah Winfrey, Mariah Carey and others have arrived to pay tribute to the star. Alicia Keys and Stevie Wonder are among some of the names expected to perform, while Houston’s long time friend and mentor Clive Davis will speak. Her co-star in the movie, The Bodyguard Kevin Costner will also address the congregation today. There is one camera in the venue and that will be streamed across the globe today, tonight and for some tomorrow. I’m watching it live on CNN and I’ll be bringing you some of the tweet messages and condolences from the service today. Among the tissues and the tears, we remember and honour one of the greatest voices of our time. RIP Whitney Houston:

@lupingcayisa: The Choir lady leading the Lord is my sheperd has Whitney’s Raves to the T cc @SwaziDlamini @judith_sephuma #Whitneycnn

@MelanieCarmen:  These songs are so moving 😦 R.I.P Whitney Houston.

@ShahanR: A fans tribute…his drawing of Whitney. #WHITNEYFUNERAL

19:44 (local time) Donnie McClurkin is now on stage. The congregation is standing, as he sings “Stand” for Whitney.

19:49: Dionne Warwick says a few short words before introducing Tyler Perry.

“God bless you. The Houston family. I know this grief.” He is telling the congregation of how he met Whitney four years ago and how “candid” she was about her life and just before he would step in to give her some words of encouragement, she would say “But the Lord”. He is talking about her grace and how it carried her home, singing for presidents and more. “Whitney Houston loved the Lord”. “Say whatever you want. God was for her and she is resting singing with the angels.”

19:55: BeBe Winans is now on stage. He’s the first one to breakdown on the stage, he was very close to her. He is telling the congregation of how they practiced in her closet and her room before they went on their tour. The song he is singing is a song he wrote for his brother, who passed away when he was 48 too. The irony. The song is called “I Really Miss You” and he says when she entered the church for his brother’s service “She just waved her hand and said family, family and so family is here today to save us”

@CNNshowbiz  BeBe gets mourners to laugh. In a true celebration of her life, he sings “I Really Miss You” #WhitneyCNN

20:05: Bishop T.D Jakes is now on stage. “You may think death has won, but it is a lie. Love will last forever for God is love”.

@billboard “I realize the dichotomy that the family faces right now… but you shared her w/ the world, & we thank you,” Bishop T.D. Jakes to family.”

Rev. Kim Burrell is now on stage singing “A Change is gonna Come” because Whitney loved this song. “She was born in Newark” words modified for the beautiful Whitney.

20:17 Kevin Costner “Whitney returns home today to the place where it all began. Dry our tears, suspend our sorrow and perhaps our anger just long enough for our sweet miracle of Whitney. Your mother and I have a lot in common and I know many of you of thinking really?” The congregation laughs. “We both grew up in the Baptist church. It wasn’t as big as this. My grandmother played the piano and she lead the choir.” He recalls his time in church, how he was yanked out for passing notes to his friends, drinking the grape juice. Whitney loved those stories. “It was easy for us to laugh. Church was what we knew”. “Whitney if you could hear me now I’d tell you, you weren’t just good enough”.

“Off you go, Whitney, to your heavenly Father. When you sing before Him, don’t you worry you’ll be good enough.”

20:36: Dionne introduces the wonderful Alicia Keys performs. She tells of how “Mima” was her nickname. She is singing Angel, “Can you send an angel to guide me”. This in light of her saying how Whitney inspired her, Brandy and Monica and other younger singers, “She made us feel strong and capable and loved”

20:46: Clive Davis is now on stage. “I cant tell you how moved, touched, inspired I am today. I feel the great spirit in this great church. It’s helping me with my grief and my heavy heart. “You wait for a voice for a lifetime. And when one person embodies it all, well it takes your breath away when I met her in 1983. Whitney said to Davis on the Tuesday before her death, “Clive I’ll be ready by August”, to which he said “Well Whitney I’m going to hold you to it. Everyone in Heaven is waiting and I know you’re going to raise the roof like nobody before”

21:00: Ray Watson, her Brother-In-Law and bodyguard is up on stage speaking. He has been her bodyguard for over 11 years. Aretha Franklin was expected to speak, but she isn’t well today so Ray has replaced her. “We had some good times. She accepted me as her brother although I was her bodyguard. She called me Uncle Ray in her playful time.”

21:09: Stevie Wonder is now ready to perform. “This is such an emotional moment. I wanted to stop and give all prayers to God for allowing me to be in life the same time as Whitney. And Dionne, Cissy and to all the family I want you to know as millions of people have said, not just in this time, but throughout her career, we loved her so much and we wont stop. What you didn’t know is that in my fantasy I had a little crush on Whitney”. He sings “Love’s In Need of Today”.

21:25: Whitney’s manager and Sister-In-Law Pat Houston is up on stage, “Let the redeemers of the Lord say Hallelujah. Even when she was tired or a bit lost, she gave, and gave and then gave some more. When she did not want to do things, she did anyway and we are so much more grateful for it. You were the rock that held her together professionally. Your wisdom of the industry did not go unnoticed. She had more respect for you on one hand. You gave her hope. Thank you for your love over all these years. She loved you. My partner and my sister, Whitney Elizabeth Houston. There are no words to describe how I feel. You stand, I need you and today I stand. Her legacy that she left behind was music but what she left for you was her love for God.”

21:43: R Kelly takes to the podium to sing Whitney’s “I Look to You” off her last album of the same name. What a fitting tribute.

21:46: Dionne Warwick says, “I would like to share a few words with you that I feel are quite appropriate. Don’t greeve for me for now I’m free I’m following the path God made for me. I took his hands when I heard him call. I turn my back and left it all.”

CeCe Winans then follows this by her tribute “Don’t cry for me” to Whitney.

21:55: Ricky Minor Houston’s Music Director is now on stage. “We were going to take the world by storm. It didn’t take me long to realise how much I love Whitney Houston. That face, that smile. That’s not why I loved Whitney Houston.” He said it could’ve been the hair, the outfits, the grace. “Whitney Houston changed my life forever, by entrusting me with her music career. Why? I believe that God sent her. She was my gift and I was hers.”

22:00 Marvin Winans is called up to lead everyone in prayer. He has now called his extended family up onto the stage. He recalls how he met her in Beverly Hills many years ago. The Winans family is about sing Tomorrow. After their brilliant performance, Marvin headed back to the podium where he preached.

The service ends with a “Let The Church Sing Amen”

That was a lovely, heartfelt service, befitting of who the diva, the talent that Whitney Houston is and despite her untimely passing, she will be remembered forever through her music, her life as a daughter, a mother and friend and a legend. Rest In Peace Whitney Houston.

“I Will Always Love You”

If I
Should stay
I would only be in your way
So I’ll go
But I know
I’ll think of you every step of
the way

And I…
Will always
Love you, oohh
Will always
Love you
My darling you

That is all I’m taking with me
So good-bye
Please don’t cry
We both know I’m not what you
You need

And I…
Will always love you
Will always love you
You, ooh

[Instrumental / Sax solo]

I hope
life treats you kind
And I hope
you have all you’ve dreamed of
And I wish you joy
and happiness
But above all this
I wish you love

And I…
Will always love you
Will always love you

I, I will always love
Darling I love you
I’ll always
I’ll always
