#PharrellwithWoolies… Are you with us?

Earlier today, I made my way to the Four Seasons Hotel in Westcliff, Johannesburg for a “big announcement” by retailer, Woolworths. We all had our suspicions as to what it was about, but nothing was revealed until most of the invited guests had arrived. The who’s who of the SA entertainment scene were in attendance, including Bonang Matheba, Boity, Jena Dover, Maps Maponyane, Zuraida Jardine and David Tlale (among many others). Oh and me. Lol. Anyway, back to the purpose of today’s announcement.

Woolworths has partnered with none other than the ever cool Pharrell Williams for their little campaign. Appointing him as the Style Director, the retailer will work closely with Williams across a series of sustainability-focused projects. The Grammy winner will jet into SA in September for a private gig for 5000 people and he’ll also be helping raise funds for schools, plus a whole bunch more, which begs the question, “Are you with us?”. For damn sure and this is how we can help Woolworths and Pharrell:

GIVE WITH US: Raising over R100 million for education Pharrell and MySchool will be calling on customers to help us raise R100 million for schools in need across South Africa through swiping their MySchool MyVillage MyPlanet cards. The more you swipe, the more you donate – the more you make a difference to schools around the country. Signing up for a card is easy and free – and you get to choose which schools benefit.

My mom has one of these cards and every month she gets a statement from the team to say how much money has been donated to the Smile Foundation, which is the organisation she has decided to focus her attention on. You know us Von Bergs and our work with the Smile Foundation 🙂

CREATE WITH US: Sustainable T-shirt Design Competition Woolies has collaborated with Bionic Yarn®, a company that creates fabric out of recycled plastic waste, to create a range of limited edition, sustainable t-shirts. Design students are invited to create and submit designs for these t-shirts that celebrate sustainability. Pharrell will select his favourite designs and these will be produced and sold in Woolies stores across the country. Winners will each receive R25 000 in prize money.

How incredibly cool is this? I love it. Not only is it empowering young designers to be creative, get their work out there, but also to have someone of Pharrell’s calibre judging you and having the opportunity to have a range in Woolworths stores around the country? Absolutely awesome.  I have some questions for the team, which I will put to them and report back on soon.

SING WITH US: Share the stage with Pharrell School singing groups are invited to practice their songs and get ready to compete to win the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to perform live alongside Pharrell Williams in front of the whole country during his MySchool concert tour of South Africa. Entrants will be shortlisted and chosen personally by Pharrell to appear alongside him on stage in September as part of an exclusive concert for WRewards Members only.

Clap along… or better sing along with the happy master himself. You cannot ask for a better opportunity. I know I’m not a singer and I’m finally okay with that. What I would love to do is sit down with this man and interview him one on one. I’m a huge fan, always have been and that would be my ultimate reward. Maybe Woolies will be nice 😉

WIN WITH US: See Pharrell live at a private concert.
If you’re not a Woolies’ WRewards or MySchool cardholder, now is the time to sign up. Members stand the chance to win a ticket to an exclusive, one-night-only private Pharrell Williams concert, exclusively for members. The only way to get a ticket to this one-night-only event is to be a Woolies WRewards / MySchool / Credit cardholder.

The amount of shopping I do at Woolworths is ridiculous… Luckily I’m swiping my card too, so who knows maybe this will be my birthday month present courtesy of Pharrell and Woolworths. If not, I’m happy to let you go and experience the ever cool Pharrell.

Here’s more from Pharrell himself:

I love this. I think it’s not only entertainment at its best, but it’s for a purpose and the purpose is to teach, educate and empower people. Loves it. #PharrellwithWoolies.

Has anyone spotted Joan Smalls in Cape Town?

Last year we had the pleasure of welcoming back to SA the lovely local-gone-global supermodel, Candice Swanepoel. The beauty jetted in to shoot a campaign with top retailer, Woolworths. Well apparently it worked out well for them. So much so that they’ve now enlisted the help of a second Victoria Secrets model, Joan Smalls for yet another campaign. She’ll be shooting the Studio W campaign over the next couple of days. Besides Top Billing (they always get in there) who else has spotted the beauty?

You’ll see a pic of her above, arriving in SA yesterday. You might also recognise her from Mrs Carter’s video for the song Yonce:

Bonang talks ‘Distraction By Bonang’

Bonang Matheba added a sexy lingerie line to her name earlier this month. The Top Billing presenter has collaborated with top retailer, Woolworths to create Distraction By Bonang. In the pictures I have seen online, the star looks incredibly gorgeous and hey, if you’re a lady wanting to look and feel as good as Bonang, or you’re a boyfriend, girlfriend or husband who would like to spoil the lady in your life for Valetine’s Day, then best you head on down to Woolworths. Check out this interview Bonang did with Women24 and see what she has to say about the line and more.

What else does B* have in store for us this year? She never disappoints, so let’s see!

Supermodel Candice Swanepoel arrives in South Africa

Candice Swanepoel has to be one of the most gorgeous women in the world… and she hails from none other than South Africa. The 24-year-old supermodel is back in South Africa for a few days to shoot a campaign for top retailer, Woolworths. Woolies never disappoints with their campaigns, so you can only imagine how good this one is going to be. A follower of mine sent me these pictures of Candice arriving in Cape Town a little earlier…

And here’s a really nice picture the Woolworths crew managed to snap:

Long haul flights and she still looks great. Oh what I’d give to be in Cape Town now to interview her. Follow all the action:

Gallery: Woolworths Fashion Convo event

The Woolworths #WWFAShionConvo took place on Wednesday the 28th of August at ClearWater Mall. This launch was arranged for the sole purpose of giving customers, celebs and a few media the opportunity to see what’s hot and trendy for the upcoming spring/ summer seasons, courtesy of Alison Page (Woolworths Trend Manager) and Grazia Editor, Danielle Weakley.

Were you not able to make the event like me? I’m going to be working on a few more details responses, but for now a tip or two from the duo includes:

  • Hot monochrome trend (that’s just a fancy way of saying black & white), which is given a fresh twist by mixing in touches of neon or bright red/pink. And this one’s not just for the ladies either, men can rock it out too.
  • Other trends include pretty florals, metallics and neutrals. And for the men, some hot tailored suits, combined with bright, fun touches. (Woolies best be giving me a good selection of suits then, ha).

Check out the gallery above to see who was there and what some of the outfits you can need to have look like.
